Got the clip from a Jack Tucker sonce called Too Far from the Rebel website run by Ricky Davis and crew. That is some classic Mooney stuff. My problem is I have never heard of Jack Tucker and even this song. When did this song come out and is it available anywhere at all. I really enjoy Mooney on this one, IMHO, one of his best breaks in that era, but I want to hear more.

Well Ricky, though he never achieved "star status", he did do a lot of recording in the '50s and early '60s, mostly on the Ozark label, and I believe he did a couple on Sun, too. I don't think any of his stuff is in print, so your best bet would be the record collector and auction sites on the web.
Good luck! |

Hey Ricky,
Jack Tucker was an icon of the old LA music scene. I did a couple of short stints with him over the years and knew him somewhat. He was probably a mediocre singer and musician but was what one would call an entertainer. Jack was a politician in the music field. I worked for him once at a place called the Pioneer Room in Norwalk, California. I'd never met him before and didn't know what to expect. As I stated before, I didn't think too much of his singing but I was amazed at his relationship with his crowd. He knew everyone's name that came in the door and would recognize them from the mike. While the rest of us were taking our breaks he'd be going from table to table and and doing his thing. The last time I saw Jack was in the early eighties at a benifit for someone else who was very ill. I ran into an old friend (Al Bruno) at Scotty's in 1998 and he told me that Jack had passed away. His band was known as Jack Tucker & the Oklahoma Playboys and played the club scene for so many years you wouldn't believe. He took what talent he had and made the most out of it and also a pretty good living for a lot of years.........JH

I had a two year stint with Jack Tucker at the Pioneer room in the mid sixties. As Jerry said he knew everyone by their name. He would meet you one time. When you came in the place two years later, he would remember your name. He was very temperamental. The old saying in LA was: "You're not a real Pro until you have been fired by Jack Tucker." |
