I've got a DVD of a movie called "The Road To Nashville" from circa '66. Great live country performances. Faron young has a steel player with him but I cant identify him. Anyone?

Thanks,

Brad
That would be your basic Dickey Overby. He was quite young and handsome in those days.

Now he's older and handsome, of course.

Smiley, you're in the town where that info is probably plentiful, but I believe it was late 50's to early 60's for Big Ben. I do have a video from the late 50's showing a very young Lloyd Green playing a Bigsby with Faron.

And on Faron's "Mary Carter Paint" album, like around 1960 or so, the band is Ben K., Wayne Moss, and Darrell McCall. So, there'd be guys around, like Darrell, who'd know the correct timetable.

But it's definitely Dicky in the "Road To N'ville" movie. He might even be playing "the Wagon," since it's for sure an Emmons wraparound in that film.

In 58 I was sitting in a club in Printers Alley with Ben Keith listening to Hank Garland, & Ben hands me his drink & says I gotta catch Farons bus, In 64 I saw Dickey Overby at the Four seasons in Aroura, Co. with Faron, I sure got around in those days! au

I'd say that Big Ben left Faron circa 1964, Paul Graupp mentions seeing Ben with the Faron around that time, and Darrell McCall was with the group in the mid 1960s.

There is a woman who is working on a book about Faron's bands, there's a website that should be found without too much difficulty.

I don't mean to contradict Herb, but I'm pretty sure it's Ben Keith on the 'Road to Nashville'...

I've also got some footage of Jimmie Crawford playing with Faron a couple years later on the Billy Walker show.

I think Jimmie's on that 'Road to Nashville' too.

scott, I too thought it was Ben in the movie, but Dicky himself assured me that it was he. Then, when I got home and looked close, I could see that it WAS Dicky, but a lot less of him than exists today.

But who is the steel player with Bill Anderson, sitting next to Jimmy Lance and in front of Snuffy Miller?

Ahhh, I remember it well....Jason ! I almost gave up steel after listening to Ben play.

Then Jimmy Day showed up and ate all my pills and got me started again.

It was a very interesting year and it was in Europe as well. I shouldn't ever complain.
I've had a good life and more memories than I care to recall. I think I've posted half of them on the Forum in 2100 posts over two years. Let's see....I've got two more years before I finish it all up. Thanks for remembering what I seemed to have forgotten !!

Regards, Paul

Herb asked,

"But who is the steel player with Bill Anderson, sitting next to Jimmy Lance and in front of Snuffy Miller?"

Is that a young Larry Sasser?

Nope, not Weldon. Played a Sho-Bud with a geometric pattern on the front apron.

I saw Bill Anderson in 1964 with Weldon playing his Sho-Bud, and this guy does not look like Weldon to me.

Don't make me watch this movie again... I'll be very upset!

Actually, I'm joking. Doodles Weaver was one of my favorite actors. Used to watch him on the Spike Jones Show. A little known trivia thing about Doodles is that when he was going to LA High in the 1920's, he climbed the school rotunda with a mannequin/dummy dressed in his clothing and, after threatening suicide, hanged the dummy from the roof of the school with the student body watching. That little stunt got him suspended for awhile.

Didn't Sonny Garrish replace Weldon Myrick with the Po Boys in the mid 60's? (Or was there somebody in between?)

Ernie,Bob Lucier played for Bill briefly, between Weldon and Sonny. I haven't seen the movie either, but there's a chance that it was Bob.

Sorry folks. The mystery is still unsloved.

I asked Bob Lucier, and he said it wasn't him. He said he only played with Bill Anderson at the time.

So who is it??
