Topic: Steel Players in the Cincinnati area? |

Hello all,
I will be in Cincinnati, Ohio for Christmas visiting family, and will be bringing my Williams with me; anybody out that way give lessons or know of any good players to check out? Funny, when I lived there, I could not find a SINGLE pedal steel for sale anywhere, not in stores, classifieds, nothing. This in a town that has TWO 24-7 country stations, and a few country clubs. | Hey Gerald when did you live here? In the 60's and early 70's you could find the occasional Sho-Bud at Hughes Music (the store I worked at when I was in high school). The guy that ran our Lebanon store,Benny Gabbard was a great steel player. Also Midwest Music had MSAs when Norlin and Peavey was handling their distribution. As far as steel players to hear, Kenny Holycross plays at a truck stop lounge at the intersection of I 75 and Ohio route 63 Tuesday thru Thursday and other places on the weekend. Kenny plays a Zum with an IVL Pitchrider. He's a great player. Also if you're a fan of traditional Country, on Friday and Saturday nights, GO TO BOBBY MACKEY'S!!! Chuck Rich plays in the house band. Chuck is one of the most UNDERRATED players in the business and the band is one of the best you will ever hear. |

Gerald, steel player extraordinaire Chuck Rich plays great steel guitar regularly with a fabulous band in the Cincinnati area. Lots of comtemporary music, jazz, etc. I'm sorry I can't tell you the name of the band or the venue or if they are on duty over the Holidays...maybe if Ron Page or Fred Layman are listening, they can help. If you can catch this group I promise you, you will enjoy them.

You might keep an ear open, also, for a six-stringer named Scotty Anderson. The superlatives always fall flat on the printed page, so I'll refrain. Listen to some samples at, for example, http://www.cdnow.com . The album is called Triple Stop.

Hey guys thanks so much, I've been to Bobby Mackey's a few times, Chuck is really amazing, it's true, uses wild custom tunings on his old Franklin, beautiful tone, very cool tasteful player. That club is truly a hoot, to be sure. I moved to NY in the eighties, went back to Ohio for a few years, it would have been in the late '90s that I was looking for a steel. Found one here in NY of all places a few days after I moved back. I will try to find Mr. Holycross, sounds like a great idea. I wonder if the Gabbard mentioned is any relation to Mike Gabbard, who worked at the Guitar Cellar for awhile and now does repair at Mike's Music; he played a Maverick, I believe. Anyway, thanks for the info, any other suggestions would be welcome!

Dont know about steelers, but I know Bootsy Collins has a studio out in the country, if ya need to hear some funky bass playing.

That truckstop that Kenny Holycross plays at is called Stoney Ridge Inn. I think they've got a recently built or remodeled club there. Years ago they were in the basement, but now they're on the 1st floor. The club is about 28 miles north of Cincinnati.
Bobby Mackey's is just a few miles to the south of Cincinnati.

| Hey Ron, I think they're calling it "Coyote Ridge" since they moved it upstairs. As far as seeing Scotty Anderson, he doesn't play clubs on a regular basis. He just finished a new C.D. that will be killer! Gerald, Mike Gabbard is a friend of mine and a great tech. He could be related to Benny. P.S. Ron, when are you going to come out to see the "New Radio Cowboys",my band? |
