As a fairly new non-pedal player I've heard a lot about Billy Robinson, but never heard him. Is there a CD available that would be a good introduction to his music?

Thanks.

I'm not sure about that, but it's pretty tough to go to a steel show these days and not hear him. He's fantastic and a ton of fun to catch live. Most of us are pretty sure he's got pedals on that thing, but we just can see them.

Come to think about it, I don't recall him ever promoting a recording at a show.

BILLY ROBINSON......who as a teenager was a regular WSM Grand Ole Opry steel player for RED FOLEY....., recorded many, many Foley hits on Decca lable along with Grady Martin is still alive an kicking. I was one of my early day inspirations and I still admire the work he did way back then. Creativity, touch and tone........a really fine musician.
He's a successful businessman in Nashville and still plays the heck out of his DERBY (I think it is!) lap steel. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Billy at the Texas Steel Jam back in March and spent the better part of two days chatting and watching him play "privately" for me.
Not only is he an accomplished steel guitarist, he is a truly fine gentleman; always sincere and respectful and his early day successes have in no way impacted his personality in any negative fashion.
He has a CD "Billy Robinson Lap Steel Guitar Instrumentals". He also has another I seem to recall but couldn't locate it at this moment. Scotty most likely will have them for sale.
His "pedal work" is all done with "bar slants" and "pulling of the strings with his bar hand fingers" to get that pedal sound.
An honor to know; a pleasure to listen to and mind blower to watch play. Actually, he is playing a STEALTH pedal steel guitar, that's why you can't see the pedals and rods.
Don't fail to get a copy of the CD....that features: Moonglow/Theme From Picnic, Born to Lose, Sugar Foot Rag, Deep Purple, Old Rugged Cross, and numerous others.
QUESTIONS?

I just talked to Billy last night on the phone and he is still in Gallitin, Tn. I can only agree with the posts about him, just not adequate words to describe his Non-pedal playing. Once when I was visiting him at his home I saw a Sho-Bud pedal steel sitting in the corner of his music room.I asked about it and he said Shot gave it to him, he can play pedals but has dedicated himself to playing the non-pedal steel. He says he enjoys it much more. His latest CD has a picture on the front with Scotty sitting on the floor watching, titled "Lap Steel Guitar Instrumentals." The picture was taken a one of the conventions in St Louis. Oh, I almost forgot, the Sho-Bud has a cover over it and his cat Mikey has the seat of Honor to watch Billy play. I am proud to call him a friend.

What Rick said !!!!
He's a legend within my mind

Billy's got a new CD available. Check with Bobbe at Steel Guitar Nashville. Billy's a dear friend and a monster player. He has the most, and funniest, stories of the ally and strip in Nashville that you'll ever hear. Purely one of the nicest guys you could ever meet...and the new CD is just great! One of the most deserved of the Hall of Fame members.
