I have a tape of this great concert from around 1988 at the (now defunct) Texas Opry House in Austin. Well, it's not complete but mostly there. I recorded it from a KERA radio broadcast in Dallas. I'm wondering if it ever got issued on CD.

It's a stellar performance featuring lots of Western Swing stuff, e.g. "Ride in My Little Red Wagon" (sung by J. Bush), "Faded Love," Maiden's Prayer," "Jessie Polka," (outstanding performance by J. Gimble), and the impeccable "Shenandoah" solo by B.E. Johnny Bush plays drums, it includes performances by Freddie Powers and some very tasty rides by Buddy. There's lots more including a recorded monologue by Bob Wills himself about his music and its origins.

If anybody has the complete recording of this concert and, better still, if it's available on CD, please contact me, I NEED a copy.

Marty Muse, Steve Palousek, and I were at the show. But you'll have to do the Vulcan Brain Scan to get the information out of us.

Incidentally, it was Monday, October 17 1988, the day the stock market dropped 25%.

Right you are, Frank. But my broker didn't have the balls to call me about it until 1988!

Actually, I mis-typed... first day with the new hands.

John,

I, too, recorded that show from a radio broadcast (KUT 90.5 I believe). My recording has Johnny Gimble reflecting on Bob Wills and a taped interview of Bob Wills on the develoment of "Old Timey" music into "Western Swing"; Johnny Bush talking about the good ol' radio days when he and Willie Nelson shared a 15 minute radio show (back in their formative years).

John, on the Big E's performance of "Shenandoah", do you hear a moaning on the recording? On my recording I hear this moan during the Emmons solo. It almost sounds like the moaning that Earroll Garner used to do while playing piano. I love this tape. Wish it was available on CD, too. Anyway, my tape is about an hour in length. So, it might be the complete recording which was released for broadcast. A recording of the whole show would be outstanding!

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Glen:

That's the one! And yes, there is a moaning on "Shenandoah" sorta like the moaning on the Charley Pride Live at Panther Hall record. If it's Buddy I'd be surprised cause he can really sing. Maybe we ought to ask him.

I'll try to find out if anyone around here knows if it was recorded and is gathering mold in some vault. If it's property of Sony Records, we may be outta luck.

I also recorded this when it was broadcast on our local PBS station. It was billed as "Willy Nelson's Lone Star Saturday Night".

I've always wondered about "the moan". I figured it might be Johnny Gimble with the mic'd fiddle under his chin.

The program was an hour and a half in length, so it all doesn't quite fit on one CD.

The tunes:

Noplace But Texas
Old Fashion Love
My Mother's Eyes
Texas Polka ?
Stardust
Sunny Side of the Street
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (and write myself a letter)
(instrumental, station break)
Bob Wills interview and medley
Waltz in D
Texas Playboy Rag
Your Faded Love
(a tune I don't know)
San Antonio Rose
(Intermission)
Jesse Polka
Mom And Dad's Waltz
I Love You a Thousand Ways
If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time
Nagadocias (sp?) Waltz
Won't You Ride My Little Red Wagon
Shenandoah
Texas and Oklahoma (You're Like Mama and Daddy to Me)
Sweet Georgia Brown
Light Crust Doughboy Theme
Alexander's Rag Time Band
Hands On The Wheel
I'm Confessing That I Love You
Bach's Minuet (Willy on Guitar)
In God's Eyes
The Family Bible
Remember Me

The musicians (mentioned in the broadcast):

Willy Nelson
Johnny Gimble
Buddy Emmons
Paul Buskirk
Johnny Bush
Freddy Powers
Dean Reynolds
Bobby Nelson

Rob, my copy ends in the middle of "Texas and Oklahoma" so I'd love to get the rest of the show. Is it on CD or tape?

BTW, it's Nacogdoches (I once lived there).

Ernie and John,

It's a 90-minute cassette tape. I also made an "abridged" version on CD. Omitted are a few of the first tunes and some inter-tune banter.

I would imagine that if this material is covered by a copyright, that would be owned by NPR. I'll contact you off-line about how to share it in one form or another without stepping on any copyright toes.

Rob;
I understand your concerns about copyrights. I'll check with PBS and see if they sell copies of the aired show. They have for a few other things, beings it's Willie they might. I could get lucky. Wish me luck!
