On the Commander Cody albumn the band plays a beautiful redition of Sunset on the Sage, who originally performed this number. This tune puts the Western in C&W music. BTW Bobby Black is awesome on this tune

It sounds a lot like the Sons of the Pioneers. Does the record label or album cover give any credit to the writer?

I haven't heard that tune in years. I guess I'm gonna have to go dig out the record and see if my turntable still works.

As a guy who heard that same Commander Cody live album in the early 70s and immediately abandoned rock music for steel guitars, I went in search of the answer to this question ...

The best I could do is find the last name of the credited songwriter -- "Richards" -- although I did discover a pretty cool "Singing Cowboys" website that should bring back memories for some Forumites: http://www.surfnetinc.com/chuck/singing.htm
