Hi Forumites. I just finished listening to Herb Steiner's new CD "Rancho Rythm Roundup" and it's right up your alley if you love great Texas dance music featuring some excellent C 6th pedal steel. Herb has a way of picking a nice variety of material and his knowledge of his instrument combined with his easy going improvising style makes for some great listening. Rick McRae plays some fine twin lines and his lead work along with Howard Kalish's fiddle playing really compliment Herb's playing as do Floyd Domino on piano, Lisa Pankratz on drums,and Terry Hale on the upright bass. This CD is really worth having! Well, she did say it was a "great showcase for C6" However, I believe Neil Flanz's review of the album is the more accurate.

The "acceptable tone" thing is an inside joke that started with a review of Jim Cohen's first album Finally Here... which is an awesome album, BTW... in which the reviewer ill-advisedly used the phrase that Jim and I both interpreted as "damning by faint praise." Jim decided to own the phrase and coined himself the "Master of Acceptable Tone."

But if the phrase is used out of context or without smiley faces, it's an inside joke that no one gets and looks like it did in the original review of Jim's CD.

As to what she meant by "tamer arrangements," you'll have to get that from her. I'll bet if she tried to work out the steel parts, "tame" would not be a word that would come to her lips.

Janice hasn't yet responded, but hey, if she doesn't like the record I'll refund her money. <font size=1>Note the lack of smiley face.</font>

The last two albums I've made are not your standard "steel guitar" albums... you know, the E9th Buddy-style ballad, the obligatory bluegrass-style fast song, the schmaltzy pop C6 swing song, the ersatz jazz song, etc. Not that great music isn't made on recordings like these, but my bag the last few years is to make western swing band albums, with twin fiddle/twin guitar parts, arrangements that are more than "jam tunes," etc.

With a great deal of exertion , I'll try to add sound clips to my website so that the tameness of the arrangements and the acceptability of the tone can be judged by the individual listener .

It's so "retro" it hurts sometimes. Seriously, Herb is the master of authentic C6th western swing. This is another great set from the Herbster and his Retrobillys.

Time for my two cents worth. I love this album and it is getting played pretty regularly at Chez Steve's.

This album really grows on you, unlike some albums that you listen to, then put aside and forget about. It is a breath of fresh air not only for the Steel guitar arena, but also for Western Swing, when was the last time you heard a Califirnia style Western Swing album? Nowadays Western Swing bands seem so wrapped up with the Bob Wills sound (and there is nothing wrong woth that, believe me) that they all end up sounding very similar. A damn fine album,..... nice one Herb,,,(the check is in the mail right?? )

I hardly get on the forum anymore, but I've got to say if you want commercial western swing at its highest level, listen to this album by Herb Steiner. Nuf said. Best, Boomer

I just wanted to move this to the top again. I think this is a really swell collection of tunes and I'm proud to have contributed to it. I've listened to it several times in the past week and it swings hard and has plenty of happening solos and cool parts. Some tried-and-true standards and several rare steel instrumental gems as well. Order it from b0b or from Herb.

Howard,... who's not a steel player but I hope desperately wants to be ... has provided the wonderful fiddle music on my last two albums. Not only has he been a great friend for the past 20 years, but we drink from the same well musically, so working with him is practically effortless for me. He also records with me on Cornell Hurd's albums and he's exceptional there as well.

He's been in bands with the best steel players that Austin has ever had: Jimmy Day, Bert Rivera, Scott Walls, Jim Loessberg, and Marty Muse. I therefore accept his compliments with a great amount of pride.

Ya know, when I release an album, I usually experience a little let-down, since invariably there are things that I decided I should have done differently, things I should have fixed, etc... that kind of stuff. But when players like Rick McRae (George Strait's lead guitarist who played the awesome jazz guitar on Rancho Rhythm Roundup) and Howard tell me how much they enjoyed making the record with me, and how proud they are of the final result, I have to take their word for it.

My philosophy about making records is that I should be the least capable musician on the album. Then, if something is amiss, I have only myself as the responsible party. I'm really fortunate that for 3 albums I've had great musicians like Leon Chambers, Mac McRae, Johnny Case, Junior Knight, Paul Polish, Rick McRae, David and Karen Biller, Howard, Lisa Pankratz, Floyd Domino, Terry Hale, and Rob Jewett to support me in my work. They are the best support a musician could ask for. I've been blessed, truly.

This is a good time to tell you Herb,that I'm playing your new CD thru the PA as breaktime music on my Cody Bryant gig down at Viva Fresh in Burbank.All the old timers who used to go 3 blocks down the street to the Riverside Rancho in the 40s&50s to see Cooley/Williams always come up and want to know why they've never heard it before as if it's an old record.The only problem is having to follow your CD with our live act. -MJ-

Herb....Job VERY well done pal.
You and the folks that cut that with you.....did Super Duper and I believe captured the real deal swing my friend.
Your tone and playing and intonation are very very good and is really enjoyable to listen to.
And yes indeed......we will be playing this CD on our breaks in the Dale Watson band.
Thanks for putting out such a great product......now I got a reason to woodshead....some fine cool licks on this project.

Hey ya'll, just got through listening to Herb's new cd, "Rancho Rhythm Roundup." Good stuff!! It seems like forever since I heard "Steel Guitar Jubilee." Good tune. Perhaps Herb may agree that the piano in just a few instances could have been up about 2 db's; otherwise, great listening. Thanks for another goodun, Herb.

Hey, Jody what're you talking about? I stopped necking and jumped off the couch to get my head in the floor model radio's speaker when Joaquin took his ride on "Just A Pair of Blue Eyes" On Tex Williams record the first time I heard it. (my neckee at the time had a pair of blue eyes & the goldest hair!) I thought he was great with that western swing on the steel! Does Herb play like that? Wow! I'm glad he's keepin' that tradition alive!
