If memory serves correct, I remember David is playing a new Carter. Is this the guitar he is playing on a recording I heard a few days ago. Eight gospel songs, and I understand there's a tab book available to the recording? How can you obtain these? Thanks. |

Hi Kenny,
Yep, I am enjoying my new Carter, but the Gospel CD you heard was recorded about 3 years ago (boy time flies) with my trusty old MSA.
I did develop a tab book, with a background track CD for the Gospel project. Other than getting one from me at a steel show, I am taking orders by mail:

You get the 82 page (I think I played too much...) tab book, and the backup track CD (without steel) for $40. It would be helpful to have the regular Gospel CD as well, but I didn't bundle it in the packet. I didn't want people that already had one to be buying a second one. The Gospel CD is normally $15, but if you want the tab, tracks, and steel CD, I'll do the whole thing for $50.
My MSA sure treated me well, but I am enjoying all the new pulls on my Carter, and the tone lays down in the studio like I wished that my MSA had.
Thanks for your interest. I hope to get my web site updated with all of this, but I can't even find the time to practice!

Hi Frank,
I'm using a George L E-66 on E9th, and a 10-1 on my C6th (I think that is the "standard" pickups on Carter's guitars). I had used E-66 pickups on both necks of my MSA for the last 8 or 9 years. I have liked using them, but I have to admit that I have never tried Bill Lawerence's pickups in any of my guitars.
How is Doug's old Mullens treating you?

Thanks for the reply, David. And, I must say you always sounded great on your MSA. Most MSAs sound too muddy to my ears, but through the E-66s and your attack, you found a way to sound great. That is why I always thought that MSA stood for "Muddy Sounding Axe!" Now, I realize it stands for "Money Swin..." Ooops, wrong thread! (just teasing folks)
Doug's Mullen is a great fit. I thought I would be able to automatically play all those tunes from Doug's recording and I still can't! I have been working on "Anthropology" and a little bit of "Jordu".
I have to add a vertical knee and some pull rods to get the C6 exactly as Doug has his and they are on the way. So, when I am done, it will have all of Doug's C6 setup and even the standard C6 "A" pedal that raises the As to B, which is not part of Doug's setup.
I played a Mullen from 1987 to 1995 and they just seem like the right guitar for me. If I were to buy a new one, then it would have to be the HWP model from Herby because they are made a little different from the Royal Precision at Herby's specs and I feel that would be the way to go.
Anyway, I recently got the Gospel Show 2001 on video and you are sounding great on that Carter, as always. Your attack is enviable.[This message was edited by Frank Estes on 04 April 2002 at 01:20 PM.] |

I have to agree with Frank here.David's MSA never sounded like an MSA.Not that an MSA sounds bad. Just different.I liked David's tone better than anyone else at the 98 Atlanta show.I was only there for the Sunday show but the boy had the tone thing going on.
I also must agree with Frank about the HWP Mullen.Or as some refer to it. Mullens ---bb |

I met David at Stoney's awhile back. I won't say how long back. LOL.. I was so impressed by him! WoW! He knocked me out with his touch, tone, range of diversity! Great player! He is so nice and humble too. I admire that in a player. We'll be hearing more from David, for sure! Theresa |

I heard people at the Atlanta Steel Guitar Extravaganza say: How does he get an MSA to sound like that ?? I talked to DS for a few minutes but it wasn't about the MSA. I reminded him of a joke he hadn't heard before. How does Floyd Crammer make a piano sound like that ?? Shot Jackson put some pedals on it for him.......
Yesterday I heard: What do you get if a piano falls down into a mine ?? Abm !!

David, You sounded FANTASTIC at the Grand Rapids show! It was a real treat to have you and Becky at our show. Yes, the new guitar sounded great, but then again, I think you could make a two by four strung with bailing wire sound good! Thank you on behalf of all of us associated with the show for your wonderful performances and your kindness. Your friends, Frank and Molly Rogers |

Just my $.02 about David Spires:
On one of the evening jam sessions at the Grand Rapids show, Hal Rugg, John Hughey, David Spires, and Herby Wallace were all lined up on the stage. Four of the finest players you can find anywhere. It was a typical jam, starting with each steeler playing the tune through, then verse-by-verse, then line-by-line. Suffice it to say that everything that Hal, John, and Herby threw out there on the C6th tuning, David Spires could play and play very well, and a great share of it he did on the E9th neck of his Carter!
David Spires is one phenomenal player IMHO. An awesome talent, an extremely polite and respectful young man, very knowledgeable beyond his years, and when he talks to you he is just as common as an old shoe. This guy is headed right to the top of the steel guitar food chain, wait and see.

David,
It was good meeting you in Grand Rapids. Your playing was impeccable and interesting. I heard nothing but great comments on your seminar. Sorry I missed it.
You play with humor and precision -- that's a great combo in my book. The 'Flintstones theme' reference was .
Hope to see you back in GR next year.

All of you sure know how to embarass a guy...
:-)
I was just checking out the Forum today to catch-up from the weekend, and I was surprised to see all of this. It's very humbling to get such positive feedback from such great players as yourselves. I had a great time at the Grand Rapids show - seeing old friends, and meeting new ones. Playing is always fun, the seminar seemed to go well, and the jam with Hal, John, and Herby was a blast too. Those guys never act like it is a big deal, but they have got to understand what an honor (and learning experience) it is for someone like me - to play along side your heroes.
Let me add a couple of notes...
Jack Heern - is the man responsible for my using the E-66 pickups. He convinced me to try one on my MSA at the 1990 June Jam, and it breathed new life into my old guitar. I've just stuck with them since... Thanks Jack!
Dan Dowd - How do I get Becky to carry my Pack-a-seat? Oh, I pay... Believe me, I pay. :-)
Thanks to all of you for your kind words. This just encourages me to work hard, and try to improve. There is so much to learn and so little time...
Sincerely,
David Spires |
