In case you missed it, the Texas Steel Guitar Association gave a Presidential Award to Dr. Wayne Yakes this past weekend for his contribution to the industry and it's players. It's nice to finally see Wayne recognized for all his "behind the scenes" efforts.
For those who do no know Wayne, there is probably no one out there with a bigger knowledge of the instrument, and absolutely no one with a bigger heart than the fine Doctor. And all this from a guy who does not even play the instrument! If I were to start listing all the people whose lives he has touched in many ways, it would tax b0b's server and crash the forum. Suffice to say the list is long, and includes the famous and unknown players. To say he has literally lengethed the lives of certain players in an understatement.
You've probably seen Wayne at the conventions. He's always ready to talk steel, and his door is always open, usually till really, really late (unless the hotel gets pissed, like last week in Dallas ). If you see him, grab him--you'll walk away the better for it. You always ecounter some interesting senarios with Wayne. I've ended up eating Italian food with he and a noted Russian scientist and Buddy Emmons (!), cruised the Nashville nightlife till 3AM with Wayne and Paul Franklin, eating steaks with Wayne and Buddy Charleton, tasting a little Ray Price moonshine...well, you get the point.. Life is never boring when the Doctor is in the house!
I personally have know Wayne for well over 20 years, and value his friendship as priceless. He has contibuted in many ways to my knowledge of the instrument, my family's health, my personal music collection, and my circle of friends, among many others. But the most important contribution to my life is he has taught me about how deep a friendship can run, and hopefully I am a little bit quicker to reach out and help someone beccause of it.
Sometimes it seems like a bit of a one-sided relationship--seems he is always doing something for me, and it's hard to return it. So this is just a little way of personally saying "thanks", and share a little with y'all about him.
Congratulations, my friend.
PS--Wayne has started a record label called Vibrato Record that I have the pleasure of coordinating--started to share some of his knowledge and releases that he feels the public needs to hear. Be sure and check it out sometime .[This message was edited by John Macy on 30 March 2002 at 09:29 AM.] |

I've yet to spend those "up till 3am, cruisin' the streets" times with Wayne, but hope to one of these days. You know, I assumed he played the steel...what a shock to hear he doesn't. I do know he's a gentleman and extremely respected in our world (and others too I'm sure). He also has great taste in players for his label! (laughing)
Anyhow, congrats Wayne. This wacky biz of ours has a true friend and I for one appreciate it.

Congrats to you Dr. Yakes! It was one of the high points of the Dallas to show to finally meet you and shake your hand. Im new to the music scene but I have seen first hand some of the wonderful things you've done for the Steel Guitar and the guys who play them. We are indeed all blessed that you are part of the world we enjoy. Im sure that theres nobody anywhere that will ever equal what you've done to touch so many in such a wonderful way. God Bless and keep you always!

John, I have to agree with everything that you said about Wayne. Since I had the good fortune to have been introduced to him by Scotty many years ago, he has been a very dear friend to me and has enriched my life in many ways. His passion for the steel guitar and those that play it is unsurpassed and he is truly deserving of the award presented to him in Dallas last week.Being able to hang out with him to me is a highlight of the conventions in both Dallas and St. Louis and I'm so glad that he was able to make it this year when circumstances looked like he might not be able to attend. Wayne, thanks for everything you've done for me and the entire steel guitar community. You're # 1 in my books. |
