Since I turned eighty a couple of weeks back, I've taken the time to look back at some very near and dear things in my life.
I have about 4,000 cassette tapes, that average anywhere from 25 to 50 songs per cassette. I cringe just thinking about someone disposing of them.
Would there be ANY interest among you in my dubbing these off onto MP-3 CD's? I could sell them for an estimated
$5.00 each. Not enough to make me rich but rather as a means to recovering the expense I paid to acquire these many irreplaceable tunes and recording sessions.
I can assure you that the majority of these tunes have not been widely publicized. I hate to see them wasted.
What say you???? |

Stephen's a curious fellow, he comes from Austin, that 'wierd' place.
I finally sold my cassettes on eBay, but I doubt they were as specialized and valuable as yours.
I see now, record to mp3 and then sell the cassettes. The value on the market varies widely. |

To establish a value, offer 5 or 50 random items from your collection at auction or set sale on Ebay.
Or on the "for sale" section of this web site. You've got a captive audience that I'd guess contains a higher concentration of Byrd fans than any other site in the world.
Or do what you can to find someone who will buy all 4000 in one lot--either through Ebay, this site, or your other best idea.
Decide what your time is worth, per hour.
Adjust your expectations up or down based on the response.
Here's a list of realized prices for Jerry Byrd cassettes on Ebay. |

Digitizing 4000 cassettes? It would take years, recording, denoise, cut in single tracks. _________________ ----------------------------------

I empathise with your feelings about all of your valueable recordings.
I have a lot of cassette and vinyl recordings that i hold dear to my heart, and i think perhaps when i am gone, no one else will care about them. So i admire your intentions to make them available to others who would care, and i am sure there are many on the forum, who would care as i feel quite certain you have some unique or hard to find recordings. Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be for you to sell them in bundles by category, and let the buyer decide if he wants to transfer them to mp3s. Perhaps i am missing the point of your post...i am assuming that anything you really want to keep you have transferred to mp3s for your own use already or you would do so before selling them and shipping them off. Good luck with this...i imagine i would be interested in some of them myself ! _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |

Other than vinyl, what I have seen is the older recording formats are very rapidly disappearing, both their appeal and the ability to play them. Unfortunately the world is rapidly changing and the old stuff is just going away, including us! |

JB's work should some how, some way be preserved IMHO. Just listening to him play should inspire us all, his tone, touch ability, impeccable - in my opinion. Everyone can benefit from his playing, again in my opinion. |

Once upon a time, I told my wife that some day we were going to take a trip to Hawaii. Later on she asked me when we were going and I said: "There's no reason to go, Jerry Byrd passed away".
I belong to a couple of different Hawaiian music clubs and when they would plan a trip to Hawaii, Jerry Byrd would conduct the tour.
I really regret missing that opportunity. |
