Does anybody know who has recorded this song on the C6th (probably in the key of D). I have some tab for the Emmons/Pennington version for E9th in the key of E. I just think it sounds better when I play it on the C6th and I want to hear another C6th version to practice/play along too.

I think I use to play this song many years ago in the key of G on the C6th tuning probably before I went to a D first string.
Starting on 2nd fret 4th string and 1st string open(G)as the melody was played on the 4th to the 3rd strings back to the 4th string and a pull off on the 2nd fret of the 2nd string.

Back in the 1970s Curly Chalker played
"Midnight in Old Amarillo" on the TV show "That Good Old Nashville Music". I don't think he recorded it.

Doug Jernigan recorded a 4 part C-6th course for the Emmons Guitar Co. in the 1970s. I think "Midnight in Old Amarillo" may be in one of the courses. Check with Scotty's Music for availability.

The song was written and originally done by the now deceased Billy Bowman unless I am badly mistaken.

Billy was another of the old time greats who in my opinion was writing things years ahead of his time. His compositions are just as fresh to me today as they were when I first heard them,40 or 50 years ago.

I recorded Midnight In Old Ammerillo 10 years ago on a band album. I played it and still play it on the c-6th tuning in the key of D. I play the head with the 7th pedal down to get the open strings.
Most guys play it on the e-9th tung in the key of E. Either way it's a great tune.
If I were to try and learn it now I would probably learn it on e-9th.
Good luck.

I saw the shot of Chalker playing it on the C6 and it appears he played it in Bb. It was a short tune about 1:09 and he was playing his switchover Baldwin Sho-Bud and it was great.

I play MIOA on C6th in E, using the open 2nd string as a drone and playing the "moving" notes primarily on the 5th string. I recorded a version for the new Cornell Hurd album but CH selected a waltz for my instrumental instead, so it remains "in the can."

It's one of our big dance numbers onstage, but I do it so much with that band I'm kind of bored with it.

Hi Kurt,
I tried sending you an mp3 file of me playing this song but it was a little to big for your email. I play this thing in the key of C in the C6th tuning using strings 3&4 open and starting on string 8 up at the 7th fret. Good luck, its a good steel guitar classic.

In St.Louis I saw Bobby Garrett play it on C6th and several sets later Buddy Emmons played it on E9th! At the Midnight Jamboree March 9th with Johnny Bush, Buddy again played it on E9th, with a few bars on C6th!!
