| Years ago, I backed up a touring Nashville star named Terry Preston. Anybody here recall WHO HE is? Just curious.....no prizes to offer for this one. |

| I think a lot of us steel players played for Ferlin at one time or another. I played for him once in Northeast Utah on the Indian Reservation and the Chief of the Tribe, (Ute,in the Uintia Mouintains, 1988) had presented him with a silver belt buckle with his name on it. (Ferlin Husky). When I worked for Bobby Vinton in Branson, Mo. in 1998, I took my photo of the band and ferlin together, and Ferlin remembered me right off. This was the time that Ferlin was doing the Breakfast show at 10:00 am in the morning, and Boxcar Willy was doing the 8:00pm show at the "Boxcar willy Theatre" and boxcars' health was pretty bad. |

Y'all may or may not know that a young Terry Preston was briefly part of Big Jim Denoon's Barndance show in 1949 in Northern CA (later featuring the Black Brothers in 1953), then in 1950 he worked with Ole Rassmussen's Nebraska Cornhuskers with Billy Tonnesson and Sammy Masters, then he moved to some place known as Bakersfield.
He was a Four Star Recording artist in the late 1940s to 1951 (or so), then he managed to score a deal with Capitol Records.
For some reason he later changed his name.. to that Ferlin Husky one that everone seems to know him by. |

Yes I know Terry Preston (Ferlin Husky). I played steel for him in Salinas California around 1948 or 49. We were playing at the Rose Room. Also played at The twin Palms in Monterey California. He was recording for 4-Star Records then and I was with him on a couple 78's. I was playing one of the first Gibson 4-pedal Electraharps. I think the reason he hired me was that he liked the sound of the pedal changes. There weren't many steel players using pedal steels at that time.
When he left Salinas he went to LA and worked with Cliffie Stone on the Town Hall Party show. That was when he got a recording contract with Capitol Records and about the time he started using his real name of Ferlin Husky. I played a few times with Big Jim DeNoon after that and then went back to the midwest and got married. I would occasionally see Ferlin and we shared many good times together.

Larry, I can't quite recall who turned Buck onto Fenders, I have read it somewhere.
I've seen some early shots of Bill Woods band and no-one has a Tele, but this would been before Buck joined and there would have only been Broadcasters on the market then.
I can't quite recall who buck bought his first Tele from, Billy Mize or.... someone?

Ferlin Huskey also recorded some comedy tunes under the name Simon Crum.
