This song has been running through my head for the past few hours and I can't remember who first recorded it. I know Elvis covered it years later, but I'm trying to remember the original. One of you guys must remember it. In keeping w/ b0b's protocol: there must have been a steel on it, so who played steel on it also? Be nice, Bobby. This is torturing me.

I think this is a Ned Miller song.

I'm not familiar with the steel player, though.

Ned Miller wrote and recorded it in the early '60's, it was a big hit. (He also had a big hit with "Invisible Tears".) The "Jack To A King" melody was based loosely on a classical piece (the name of which escapes me at the moment). I don't think Ned's version had any steel, though.

It was originally released in 1957 on Dot Records. Re-released in 1963 on Fabor Records, where it reached #6 on the Billboard charts.

What a great song that is. One of my favorites.

But I hear there is a new version playing around the sex change industry.

"From a Jack to a Queen.

They changed my sex with this strange machine.

I'm not a King now, cause I'm a Queen.

I'll be the Queen of your heart."

Bridge:

"For just a little while, I thought that I might be an it.

Then just in time I saw, my two implanted girly *its......"

OK I know. Enough of that.

This was one of the (very few) country tunes to be a pop hit in the UK (along with "Lucille", "Distant Drums", "Welcome To My World", and "Stand By Your Man"... that's about it, I think!)
I didn't even know that such a thing as "country" music existed at the time, but I LOVED that song...

I think Leroy VanDyke had the hit on this.

Think again Dan, it was written and first recorded by Ned Miller which was a big hit and then about 10 or 12 years ago Ricky Van Shelton had a big hit on it too.

I may be mistaken but I think Jack Scott had a cut and got a lot of plays on it also. Plewse correct me if I have been misled. Thanks...

Jack Scott did not have a charted record of "From a Jack To A King". He may have recorded it and put it on an album. His big hit was "What In the World's Come Over You". Ned Miller had the big hit on "From A Jack To A King"

Thanks Larry. Could have sworn that Jack's cut (assuming he recorded it) made it close to the # 1 spot. Even I can make a mistake. Oh well....

Didn't Jack Green have a big hit with that song...one of his first top five recordings I think.

Bob.
