Was listening some today to the urban/r&b station when the new single by Maxwell came on called "This Woman's Work". Some mighty tastey Bruce Bouton pedal steel on the track was a really nice touch.

I remember Bruce told me Maxwell flew him up to New York last fall for the sessions, and turned out he had listened to country music all his life via his parents, who were huge fans. He's a big steel fan.

Anyway, most people on this forum would not touch this CD with MY ten foot pole, but I bought it today, and it's pretty cool--very urban.

Way to go, Bruce. I'm sure Maxwell's core audience is wondering what a "pedal steel guitar" is in the credits (2nd billing, by the way...). Nice to see it reaching a wider audience.

I have heard some Maxwell before. Would be interested in hearing steel in his music. I have a friend who is a big Maxwell fan. She also likes Kenny Rogers. There's an odd combination.

This is one of my favorite albums from last year. Bruce did some killer playing on a number of cuts. I love Maxwell, and Bruce did some of the best, most original steel playing to hit any chart last year. Most of you guys will hate this CD so I wouldn't recommend you buy it.

Thank's for the kind words.Maxwell was a pleasure to work with. He felt like pedal steel and R&B was a natural mix a couldn't believe the instrument hadn't been used more. I took a small effects rack to NY but ended up recording with a Franklin steel, boss delay and a 59 Bassmen with four tens. He and the engineer wanted pure sounds. I find it ironic that he has no qualms about releasing a record on Urban radio that has steel throughout the song(loud and clear)while some of our Nashville artists do everything they can to hide the steel and in many cases have quit carrying one on the road. What's a pedalhead to do?
Happy New Year
