Juan Garcia Esquivel passed away on Jan 3. He established the swinging bachelor pad sound of the 50's and 60's. NPR has done a couple of rememberances of him. He was also the first producer to put different halves of the orchestra in 2 different studios at the same time to get maximum stereo separation.
So who played steel on his sessions? I think most of the work was done in California, and it sounds like a Fender lap steel. |

Don't know if any of you guys have ever heard this quirky music of Esquivel's, but it sure is some cool, weird stuff. Guess he came along about the time that "stereo" was introduced, about 1958, and he wanted to take full advantage of the 2 channel separation.
Some of the music was very campy, and bordering on silly, and others was subtle, then just as you were feeling quiet and serene, BAM !! he would blast you out of your chair with some super loud brass, or steel guitar, placed very cleverly throughout many of his repertoire, and yes, it was Alvino Rey.
If you have never listened to true "Space-Age-Bachelor-Pad" Music before, you owe it to yourself to check out some Esquivel!......but keep an open mind!!!!
Sorry to hear of his passing. I read somewhere that he was living with a brother somewhere in Southern Mexico, and was not well for many years, but he was very aware of the sudden resurgence of his music in the last 5 years or so, after being considered as a joke for so many years, maybe he will finally get the recognition that is due him.
By the way, is Alvino Rey still with us???

I read in a book about the swing era (can't remember the title right now) that although Alvino did much of the steel with Esquivel, that when Alvino couldn't make it he had one of his percussionists play steel.
The book said that the person was "scared" of the steel at first.
I know where the book is and will report back with the details next week (I'm currently out of town).
