Dang...I have been listening to tons of Buck recently. I recently got the boxed set and have listened to it quite a bit. I do have to comment that I much prefer the Live at Carnagie Hall CD over the boxed set. Brumley sounds like he is having a ball! Several of the songs on the boxed set have no steel at all! I really would like to get a CD with more of Buck live w/steel. A glaring omission from the boxed set is "Keys in the Mailbox". I just wish that the live CD had more full length songs, and less medleys and much less "comedy".

Keys in the mailbox...come on in..is by Freddie Hart. I didn't know Buck did it to. I thought us CWO's (ret) were suspose to know everything? I did when I was 20 but evidently have forgotten most of it. Did you find your Blonde Stringmaster? (Much like Black Emmons' they sound better).

You can get all the Buck you want on the Sundazed CD re-issues of Buck's great Capitol LP's of the early and mid 60's. I recommend the following LP's as I feel they capture the Bakersfield Sound at its best...hard driving bass and great steel... by Ralph Mooney, Jay McDonald, and Tom Brumley. "Buck Owens Sings Harland Howard", "You're For Me", "On the Bandstand" (this is his best one in my opinion), "Buck Owens Sings Tommy Collins", "My Heart Skips a Beat/Together Again" and "I Don't Care". Go to the website CD Now.com and select the Buck Owens menu. You will find those albums and many more. |

Buck recorded "Keys in the Mailbox on two albums. "Buck Owens Sings Harlan Howard" and "Hotdog". I always associated this as a Buck song, because my stepdads band played it in the sixties and always introduced it as a Buck song. I honestly don't know who Freddie Hart is.
Some of the best steel work EVER...is on the CD "Hotdog". This is a newer recording, I believe from about 1990 using Ralph Mooney and Terry Christopherson on steel.
I did get the 59-90 boxed set and was surprised that certain songs like "Act Naturally" have zero steel on the studio cut.
Brumley is credited on this cut, but there is no discernible steel on it....not even faint background pads.
I have this memory of someone on the forum from the Seattle area who plays in a Buck tribute band....All Buck, All the time, was their motto. That would be a lot of fun!

Steve,
Freddie Hart had a "monster" hit in the '70s entitled "Easy Lovin'".
Tony Booth covered "Key's In The Mailbox" back in the '70s. I think the excellent steel work on this cut was done done by fellow forumite Jerry Brightman (please don't shoot me if I'm wrong!)

More pedal steel, more standard-setting Don Rich harmony, and a better sound technically than any of the studio records I've heard.

Hey Steve & all the rest of you "Buckaholic's"..
Check out Buck's website..He now has video's of some of his
'60's TV "Ranch Show's"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you really like to see Buck & Don performing before the TV camera's you need these videos..He has a 3 video set or you buy them individually-whichever you prefer-each one has 4 or 5 of his TV shows on them..

It's hard being a Buckoholic in today's pop culture. His 15 minutes of fame came to most people via Hee-Haw. A lot of people don't like that show.
I was a fanatic because I got to see the Ranch Shows on KTVT - Channel 11 out of Fort Worth!
Anyone remember Bill Mack and Icky Twerp?? I hear there was a local weekely program around there showcasing Bob Wills & band - anyone remember?

Steve, I also got the Buck Boxset 1959-90 for Christmas. It is great, and as typical of Rhino, great liner notes and info. I too had only seen Buck in the Hee Haw years, but was inspired to check out his real stuff after seeing and talking to Jerry Brightman this November at the PSGA Show.
Thanks Jerry, I am really enjoying listening to these fine records.

Sam Marshall! Wow, man I remember Icky Twerp and also used to watch the "Ranch" on KTVT 11. I've got a bunch of friends who work and did work at KTVT. I think Icky's name was Bill Canfield. The long time KTVT sales mgr Dick Gifford is a very close friend. Dick is an international Barbershop Quartet Champion. Clyde George from Weatherford, TX. who is a first class musician himself works for KTVT. I know this stuff is off of the "Buck" subject.
Bill Mack is still around. I don't know if he is still doing the "Midnight Cowboy" thing or not. I quit listening to AM 820 WBAP (Ft. Worth) when it went all News Talk. For awhile it still carried "Syndicated" Bill Mack. Bill used to play lots of classic country.
My friend Joe Bielenski has a classic Country show on KYXS 95.9 FM which is simulcast in numerous areas and they are about to upgrade to 100,000 watts. I'll try to get a list of radio stations who carry Joe's show, but he plays and plays BUCK, Tony Booth, Wynn Stewart, Darrell McCall. Not to mention TONS of steel music as he is an avid steel guitar enthusiast. And probably the closest country DJ to alot of the best players in the business these days. Joe don't play it if it ain't country. Joe is also very close to Ralph Mooney. He plays drums with Ralph when Ralph does the TX Steel guitar show in March.
Tony Booth's recording of "Keys in the Mailbox" is my favorite. I wasn't sure who did the steel work on it. But I listened to it today.
Steve you really started something. But I'm getting the Buck videos tomorrow. I LOVE the West Coast! What Fun! |

You guys who missed Buck's TV show missed the real deal. Brumley used to play his ride on "Together Again" grinning at the camera the whole time, not even looking at his hands. (That could explain why he has a show in Branson now.)
Back in those days it was common to see Willin Nelson in sharkskin suits with short hair and Johnny Paycheck hosting the Cowtown Jamboree on Channel 11. It was great local programming, no network affiliation, real down home.
Wow, what a concept! Country music on TV!
