Asheville/Hendersonville area?

Anybody playing up there? The one time about 2 years ago that I seriously tried to find some hillbilly music, I was really disappointed. Nothing but blues, from Brevard to Hendersonville, Asheville. Drove all the way to Cherokee that night, saw some pop-ish pseudo-C&W band by a casino, huge let down. I had the idea they would have some better twang closer to Gnashville than my normal Florida locale, but I guess I don't know where to look for it... anybody?

I'm mostly a fiddler (more a steel "owner" than player), but I would love to sit in with a steeler when I visit there again. Or at least listen!

Off-line replies appreciated as well: BoFrazer@cfl.rr.com

Peace, and have a great 2002,
Bo

hey bo-
i live in asheville, although i'm down in Florida alot lately. mostly tampa and jax.

i played steel with a band in asheville for awhile, but that fell apart a couple years ago.
not much country or honkytonk to speak of now. mostly just bluegrass and "jam" bands.

Hello, Bo

I've lived here in Asheville for eighteen months and, apart from a two-day 'run' of 'Always - Patsy Cline' at The Diana Wortham Theatre in May '01 (a gig I actually got from the playwright who was living in Nashville at the time - it was coincidence that I happened to live here!), I have yet to play a casual gig anywhere in the area!

I'd have to agree. It's mostly blues or bluegrass around here, although I'd happily play both! We came here because my wife's job brought us - all my work tends to be theatre shows and, as a result, I either drive to Nashville to meet the tour 'bus, or travel to wherever the theatrical 'run' is taking place. That's nothing new, but it'd be great to be able to play a local gig for a few hours, then sleep in my own bed!

It's a pretty place to be unemployed, though.....
