When I was in Sydney years ago there was a club called Kings Cross. It had three levels & I remember the bottom level was the country bar. Might try there Image

If you can find where Michell Rose is playing...you will be extreamly impressed but mad that your jaw won't close for several hours after you hear "That Man" play.

Len,
I havent spent any length of time...just fleeting visits....to Sydney.....but the Pub Rick was refering to was probably the Texas Tavern......Kings Cross is the area.....its real sleazy...drugs...weirdos...ladies of the night...please stay away.
The steel player that Rick probably saw would have been Kenny Kitching.....he lives up here now.
I will make a couple of calls and see if i can find out whats happening, or maybe get a couple of phone numbers of steel players there so you can find out where they are picking during your trip to Aus.
If I come up with anything I will E-mail you or post it here.
Regards
Tony

Hey Len!..go check your E-mail I've put the phone numbers of two of the finest there...they should know what is going on.

Yeh Rick...I was based there in the Navy then....probably had a drink with you!!!
Just for your memory then..The Texas Tavern was where you would have seen the country band with Kenny on steel.
Les Girls was the nightclub up near the fountain where all (the girls )had adams apples and had to shave three times a day
The Whiskey Au Go Go was pretty popular too
Cant remember any of the other places

Go to the free beaches, it is much more fun than surfing --- or better yet, do both. Does not Jason Odd live in that area ???
Have fun!!

Hey Steven!
All the beaches in Aus are free....heaps around Sydney. All you got to do is take notice of the Flags where it is safe to swim and if the Lifeguard tell you to get out..you do it.....rips.....sharks.....could be anything!
My friend Jason lives in Melbourne...which is 6 or 7 hundred mile south of Sydney.....and I live about the same distance North.

Thanks Tony for the information.

Ahem....Rips...sharks....could be anything?

I hope you don't think I am going any where near the water?

Happy Holidays,
Lenny

Guys, as Tony noted I'm about as far as you can get from Sydney yet still remain part of the East Coast.
Sorry I can't offer any info on the live scene, just too far away for me to have bothered following it closely.

Steve, free beaches are okay, but you end uphaving to use a lot more sunscreen and then if you want to sit on the sand.. well you can get a rash from that sort of thing.
(hee hee)

As a side note, I used to live in Cronulla a beach suburb in Sydney, a great place to live.
The pumped the poo out at two miles and the drunken brawls kicked off at 10:30 pm every Fri-Sat-Sun on the main beach strip, where I lived naturally!

I saw several mentions of him at the site that Jim Cohen posted about the Feral Swing Cats. That site is http://www.tamworthragepage.com/feraltam.htm

Len. I think Tommy Grasso is in that area. Hes' a great "south paw" steel player. Check him out if you can find him playing around there sometime.

Both Tommy Grasso and Michel Rose are based in Sydney. Saw them there last uyear-- just an afternoon out dining with them. No idea where they are playing.
Both are worth seeing and hearing.
Both are real quality players. Tommy is strange to watch-- he does it all backwards!
I played some duets with him in Brisbane two years ago and it was like looking in a mirror...

Winnie

By the way... there WILL be a Steel hoo-hah in Brisbane on Feb. 24th...
