This sounds wonderful . . . wish we could be there!
This Monday, December 3, following the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Lincoln Center:
at 6:30 and again at 8:30 pm, the Campbell Brothers are scheduled to perform at Lincoln Center in Manhattan NY.

Also, here's more information and sound samples from their 2 NEWly released CD's featuring very talented pedal steel guitarist, Chuck Campbell, marvelous lap steel guitarist, Darick Campbell, ** and the lively and inspiring Sacred Steel style of music which Chuck and the Campbell Brothers play.
**Actually, Chuck and Darick are equally at home on both pedal and lap and often switch during their performance

Ann, you wanted some feedback with regard to The Campbell Bros. on a need to know basis? Be careful what you wish, this will be probably more than you need to know..
First, thanks for the heads up on this concert. It was a beautiful mild night here in the Big Apple and it began with the lighting of the tree at Lincoln Center which included a couple of choirs and Wynton Marsalas. A great warm up for the evening ahead. This is a showcase of performers called "Winter's Eve". There are ten musical venues taking place in neighborhood stores within a 3 block area. Kind of like a mini Jazz Fest only without the etoufe', po' boys, and crawfish monica. So I had a slice of pizza, a New York pretzel, and a dirty water hot dog...forgetaboutit! The Campbell Bros. set (two 45 minute sets)took place in Tower Records.
The great thing was that I got to see The Campbell Bros. up close and personal as there were maybe 40 people total for each set. Let me tell you, they are awesome in their playing, their music, and their presence. You cannot stand still. I saw people who just wandered in and they were mesmorized by the intensity of music going on. Inspirational? Totally. With Chuck on pedal steel (Carter 12 string, 7&6) and Darick on 8 string Fender Deluxe(Stringmaster)it was a side by side showcase of pedal and non pedal. They really evoke a lot of different sounds and emotions, using their own brand of techniques.

I liked watching Chuck using quick percussive strums, framming, I believe is the term, and Darick working the volume and blend control while picking, getting an almost human voice sound from his Fender.

Darick also plays a lot of bass lines as there was no bass player. Phil Campbell, right of Darick plays an excellent guitar, and Phil's son plays drums. Kate Jackson on vocals was earth shattering and another female vocalist(didn't get her name, sorry)also tore up the house.
I got a chance to speak with Chuck and Darick(during the break) which I really enjoyed. You will not meet nicer people anywhere. Since I'm more of a non pedal guy I was getting into detail with Darick over Fenders and he insisted that I try his. I was hesitant and nervous at first but then I went ahead and played a little. After listening to me, they promised that they would pray for me on Sunday...
Seriously, they completely rocked the entire house. I made some good friends this evening.

First of all, thanks to Ann for keeping us informed about what's going on here in NYC right under our noses. I saw only the second set at Tower Records (!) and can only say it was one of the most intense musical experiences I've had in a long, long time. I've been listening to the Arhoolie records for a few years now, and have seen Robert Randolph play, but seeing the Campbell Brothers live added a new dimension for me; their level of musical interaction, intensity and connected-ness was just unbelievable! So much pure passion (sorry for the hackneyed word choice), feeling, just all this love for playing music; there we all were jumping around (for joy) like it was the only thing that mattered, in a stiff, brightly-lit corporate record store no less.
Chuck took some solos that truly brought tears to your eyes, they were just brimming over with soul. Then there was the gorgeous singing, deep grooves without a bass player (!) a true monster drummer... friends, they're not to be missed.
Chuck even invited me to take his twelve string for a spin, but I demurred. What was I going to do with it? Really great time was had by all.

Thanks SO much Howard for the photos and great 'report' and Gerald for your perspective, as well ... anyone else have a chance to see this or other Campbell Brothers performances and wish to tell us about it?

I saw the Campbells at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center at Millikin University in Decatur, IL.
They were as thrilling to see as everyone says. I was especially touched when they talked about how, sometimes, as in all families they might get into some "issues" among themselves. They said all it takes to solve the problem is for one of them, usually Darick, (the baby), to start playing something on his non-pedal.
Darick then began to play a melody and after a few bars, one of the others joined in. After just a few more measures, I was reduced to tears. I don't remember being any more blesses by music than i was that evening and I'll catch their shows any time the distance isn't prohibitive.
These folks have church for real. |
