Anyone know the steel player on Karen Carpenter's rendition of "Top of the World"?
It seemed to add a lot of life to the song.

That would be Lloyd Green.

I'll go out on a limb here because I remember hearing that Buddy Emmons had done several things with the Carpenter's when they were looking for that sound in the 60's.
And I agree, it was a perfect fit !

There were actually two steel players on that recording. Red Rhodes and Buddy Emmons. The intro belongs to Red, all the fills in the song are Buddy”s, and the ending is Red again. Strange deal, but if you go back and search the archives of the forum, Buddy confirms this.

Theresa might be talking about Lynn Andersons version.

this has come up a cupla times before. I actually put on a disguise and went into a record store and got a Carpenter's album with that on it.
Anyway, here's the earlier threads:

It does really sound like it's one steeler on the recording; but maybe Red Rhode's format with Buddy's innovation? I wonder if Richard Carpenter (Karen's brother, I think it's Richard) had anything to do with the creation of the sound? I know he was involved in most of the background music for his sister's music. Thanks for the input.

Bob, Why did you disguise yourself to buy a Carpenter's album?

Boy was I wrong . . Sorry. It was Buddy and not JayDee on that "Top Of The World" I stand corrected.
