I'm a beginner...I want to know from you regular gig players out there what songs you play/have to play.
What are your Top 10?
-Songs that feature a vocalist?
-Songs that feature another musician?
-Songs YOU enjoy playing?
-Songs that get the crowd juiced up?
Thanks for your thoughts.

My two cents worth is actually only worth 1 cent. The above post with the 'LINK" is right on the money. I would venture to say that if you could cover a few old Ray Price tunes, and a few Patsy Cline tunes
the rest would fall right into place. I would only add that one should come on strong with a lead line and not be limited to add-libing over the changes.
My top 5:
Crazy
Release Me
Night Life
For the Good Times
Sweet Dreams
Not that these are the top tunes but if you can cover these there won't be much you can't cover from here..
After returning to Steel from a many year self imposed layoff, these are the tunes I am working on which is bringing it back...

As a beginner, I'd concentrate on backup rather than instrumentals. I find there are very few, if any, instrumentals in many bands. In fact, it's rare to have an instrumental anymore. Seems like the singers just go at it.
Maybe the bands I work in are exceptions but that's the way it's been going the last couple of years. Learning to play backup is the bread and butter of most steelers.
