Connie Smith Song
I was listening to a Connie Smith Cd today and I think I heard the best steel kickoff I have ever heard! IMHO of course. It was on the song, "I never once stopped loving you" The funny thing is, I've been listening to her songs since her first hit! And it seems that now that I'm older,(Is 68 older?) I hear them better. Anyway that steel kickoff makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck!!! Leigh

The reason it sounds better than what your hearing today may be because it is!
Steel was incredible when country was country, also , IMHO.
(not that good things can't be found in this day and time)

When I worked with Connie we did "I'll Come Running" on the Opry. Weldon used to set down at his guitar and watch me play it. He told me once that I made it look easy. I told him that he did the hard part, he created it, I was only playing it. That song and "I've Got My Baby On My Mind" & Louisiana Man were all fun to play. Plus I loved her and her voice, what a talent.

Mike you can say that again. Connie is great. I have her live in Branson CD with Jack Smith on steel. He is playing all the great Weldon licks too, and some of his own. This is one CD I listen to all the time, and not just for the steel. I just love Connie. If she wasn't married to old whats his name, well never mind I'm too young for her. But, then again.....

I love Weldon's playing with Connie...It's hard to pick out a favorite intro but I really like "I Can't Remember" and "Then and Only Then". Of course, Weldon is one of my favorite steel players, period.
A couple of years ago she was on the George Jones Show when that was running on TNN. I forget the song she did but it was great - she still really has it, whatever "it" is.
Bobbe, you sure were lucky to play on the road with her, although I don't envy you having to "strain" for Weldon's style (although if anybody could do it I'm sure you could). I don't even attempt those licks in the upper stratosphere - I just sit back and enjoy listening!

Yes Connie is truly a Class Act and Bobby don't forget She is a Class Act when it comes to her personality too. I had the pleasure of working with Her for a while and her personality is as great off stage as it is on stage. Just for the record now She has one of the finest steel guitarist working with Her and I am proud to say he is my friend and always will be....Johnny (The Atomic Dumplin') Cox...
