Singin'and playing, mmmmmmmm
Words from my band-members:
Why don't we do like the Scottish did ages ago, they used a bagpipe-brigade, which weird sounds drove the enemy to madness and fear. How about sending a bunch of steelers, all equiped with session 500's to Afganistan? Image

Not to worry, Johan, Gen. Patton's steel guitar army has been dispatched to Kabul and is taking control of the situation. And how 'bout those uniforms?

Johann, do you know why Bagpipe players are always marching? They're trying to get away from that awful screeching noise.

I don't know anything about A.E. Patton's Orchestra, but the photo comes from a series of sheet music published by Gibson called Mastertone System for Steel Guitar. It's copyrighted 1939. I acquired a set of this music in 1977 or '78. It's illustrated with photos of steel guitar and stringed instrument groups and orchestras all playing a variety of Gibson instruments. This group of A.E. Patton's is the largest, but there are many other astounding and amusing photos. In the late 70s I wrote a column called "The Hawaiian Touch" for Tom Bradshaw's short-lived Steel Guitarist Magazine in which I transcribed some of these tunes and used photos from this sheet music. Although I have long since lost it, I requested and received a letter from the Gibson Co. giving me permission to reproduce the photos. I may scan and post some others as time permits, although what I'd really like to do is make a little web site with them.
Can you imagine what this gang must've sounded like?
