| Remember the good ole days? Billy Robinson was on steel and Red Foley was the #1 Host on the Opry. WHO? was that great lead guitarist? He played on Sunday Down in Tennessee and Tennessee Saturday Night? Fine guitarist! What was his name? What ever happened to him? Is he still around? Where did he go after the Opry? Was he great to work with or what? Just curious in my old age. I think he had a double neck something or other with his name emblazened thereon. |

I'm thinking it might have been Joe Maphis. He played with Red Foley several different times, and he did have a double-neck (Gibson, I believe)...but man, that was a long time ago!  [This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 02 September 2001 at 05:09 PM.] |

I don't know the answer to Ray's question, but y'all are really making me feel old. I got to know Merle Travis and Joe and Roselee Maphis back in the early '50's. They were my inspiration for falling in love with country music and the steel guitar.
What ever happened to Joe and Roselee? Unfortunatley I know what happend to Merle.

Chances are pretty good,that it was Hank Garland.
Donny,
Joe Maphis played a double-neck Mosrite.
Allen,
Unfortunatey,Joe Maphis passed away,several years ago. Rose Lee is still with us. She lives here,in the Nashville area. I call her every year,(Dec.29) & wish her happy birthday.

| Allen: Joe Maphis died a few years ago from lung Cancer. I worked one of the last gigs he did at The California Country Club in Ontario, California, but I don't remember what year. I know it was before 1988. Rose Lee was also there. I heard she had moved to Nashville following his death, but don't know for sure. Joe and Rose Lee were two of my favorite stars to work with. Such NICE People. Sorry, I didn't read Smiley's post prior to posting. Smiley, tell Rose Lee hello for me, I love that lady (not romantically). Ray and Friends, I THINK the guitarist on "Tenneessee Saturday Night" was either Zeb Turner or possibly his brother Zeke Turner. I think Zeb was the primary giutarist for Red during that period.
