May issue of Guitar Player;
page 76; Ry referring to his modified '67 Fender Stratocaster: "...The pickup in the bridge position is a replicated Bigsby eight-string steel guitar pickup made by Paul Warni(c)k. It's a fantastic-sounding pickup...";
page 77; referring to his Bigsby Tri-Neck Pedal Steel: "...This is a thing of beauty, and my prized possession...Paul Warnik put this one together from salvaged parts..."
Pretty cool, eh? |

Dennis O and Al T-I am indeed grateful to the great Ry Cooder for his kind words in the May issue of GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE in which he is the featured cover artist-while most folks know that Ry is the quintessential slide guitarist who has worked with so many rock and pop artists-not many folks know that during his youthful days growing up in California-his folks took him to see players like Speedy West and Vance Terry-whom Ry holds in high esteem-Ry first contacted me about the "P.A. Re-Issue" Bigsby guitars that Dave Peterson and I were building (that was back in 1996) we arrainged to meet at Scotty's that year and Ry took delivery of the finished guitar then-It was a real treat for me to hang out with Ry and show him around the steel show (which he had never been to before) especially since 1996 was one of the best St. Louis conventions that I ever attended-at that time Ry told me about his important upcoming musical venture with the Cuban musicians-the award winning concerts and documentary of "The Buena Vista Social Club" would come out two years later-while Ry did not play the steel guitar on those sessions-he did play steel on some later sessions with those folks-Ry says that he thought the steel guitar (6th tuning) could blend in with the "Musica de los Cubanos"-later on we set him up with one of our Bigsby pickup units for him to add to his legendary "Cooder Caster"-Ry says he especially loves the sound of that pickup for slide playing in combination with the other pickup that he has on that one-In summary it was really a great feeling to have a player of his renown and accomplishments to say that the guitar that I built for him was his "most prized possession" |

And I was just about to start a "Where is Paul Warnik?" thread ...
This is great news, Paul -- I'm going to get mentioned in the same breath as Ry Cooder!! (That is, if you say "Satisfied customers include Ry Cooder, Dan Tyack, Rick Aiello and Russ Young ...")
Needless to say, any similarity ends there. |

Russ-you forgot other notables that I have done business with-John Fogerty,Junior Brown,and Tut Taylor-to name a few! But seriously-I just finally got through to RY on the phone earlier today-He is doing well and sending along a copy of his newest release "Mambo Sinuendo" recorded with the "Buena Vista" players Manuel Galban (guitar) and Orlando Lopez (doghouse bass) Ry says that there is some of his steel playing (on the afore mentioned guitar) on this-also appearing on the new disc Ry's son (percussionist) Joaquin Cooder-Guess who Ry named him after? For real! Thats gotta tell you the guy loves steel guitar-I always said that if I ever had a son I would name him Lloyd Weldon |

Ray M-Yeah I'm still waiting too since I did contribute material for the book-I guess I shall have to check with Ron Middlebrook (Centerstream Publications) or Dave Westerbeke (if he is still to be the author) |

I never realized Ry Cooder played steel guitar. Does anyone know what tunings he favors?

Bad news from Dave Peterson my partner in the (Bigsby) P.A. Re-Issue project-The foundry which we have used to cast the iron cores for the pickups has gone out of business-This means that we will not be able to (at least temporarily) provide any more individual Bigsby steel guitar pickups (like the one Ry got) for sale-The few cores that we have left in stock are already dedicated for use on the next two triple neck P.A. Re-Issue steels that we are tooling up to build again (probably for the very last time) |
