Did anyone catch Fred playing steel with Porter Wagoner on the Opry tonight? Porter let the band play an instrumental that Fred wrote. Fred's GFI looked and sounded great. I notice he has the E9 tuning on the back neck. Anyone know what he does with the front neck?

Yes; i did see Fred on the Opry tonight on TV..He sure has come a long way since the days of Nashville Now-huh? That was real hot instrumental he wrote..I don't know what he has on the front neck but i am sure interested to find out..Anybody out there got an answer??? Later..Ron

Years ago, my first real pedal steel(a fender 1000) had the E9th on the back neck, because thats where Ralph Mooney had his and still does. I had C6th on the front neck. My next guitar, a ZB were just the opposite, which I still use today on my Pedalmaster. one of their shows. Fred was playin'
steel with 'em then & I got to shoot the
bull with him for quite awhile after the
show. Heluva nice guy! He had a single
neck Sho~Bud back then with 2 small
Tubeworks amps.

Somebody once said that he had like an open G or A dobro tuning like Jay MacDonald and some of the other West Coast guys had on their Fenders.

Saw that...Fred sounded good as always. Who was the guitarist? (Sorry, but I am not familiar with a lot of the players.)

The guitarist was Billy Johnson. Billy is a very under-rated player. Leon Rhodes was playing rythym guitar. I think we all know what Leon is capable of playing.

I think the front neck is a six string neck tuned in a G tuning for use with his MATCH-BRO.

I saw hm use it like that a few yrs ago.

Im pretty sure my wife hates steel guitars but she liked the GFI. Maybe theres hope!
Fred sure doesnt waste any motion on his pickin hand ! Nice hat too.

Since Fred is also a great guitar player, I thought the front neck may have been a fretted neck like Gene Fields plays. I would like to know for sure if anyone finds out.

I saw Fred several years ago on a morning show with Ralph Emory from The Opryland Hotel
(or whatever) playing a natural finish GFI
keyless & I belive that had a fretted 6 string neck up front. Don't know if that's the steel you saw on TV or not.

Oops...I posted above without knowing the guy's name. Yeah, he can pick and a half!

I read an article/interview with Fred in Guitar Player magazine a few years ago that was really interesting. He was a high school music teacher I believe and came to Nashville with Christy Lane of One Day at a Time fame. His first big break came when he played guitar on the Kendall's recording of Heaven's Just a Sin Away. When that came out a lot of people kept asking who the guitar player was. One night on Nashville Now the group Alabama was on and Jeff Cook said "Fred plays on all our records and then teaches the parts to me to play on the road". He also said that the Kendall's thing was cut with a Fender Telecaster played through a ShoBud amp.
