Grapevine has it that you had a short gig with Bill Monroe. Seems that Gorden Terry helped you land the job. Any comment?
BTW Broken down bridge was right. But then,a clock that won't run is right twice a day!!

Jack,
Probably the shortest gig with Bill Monroe of anyone I know. I was sitting behind my steel on the Opry stage during Bill's performance of Blue Moon of Kentucky. When it was time for Gordon to play, Gordon gave me the nod and I played a Speedy West solo, crash bar, chatter bar, boo-wah, and everything else I could cram into sixteen bars. We could all guess as to how much Bill was a fan of Speedy's technique, so I needn't elaborate beyond that. Sounded great to me though. Of course we had to scrape Gordon off the floor. |

Buddy, as I remember, Shot really loved that "short stint" with Bill,I was in the dressing room right afterwards and saw the fireworks,this being the 4th of July, thought I'd bring it up! Think I'm the one that told Jack about this "short stint".
I saw your solo and was very impressed. Much more than Bill Monroe was anyway! Was'nt it Shot that got you that spot?
None of this requires an answer, Just great old days to be remembered,and I have way to many in this silly business to remember.
Bigsby sounded good that nite,or was it--------------- who cares, it was great!

great story...
hey I've heard Big Mon with accordions and clarinets. A steel guitar might'a just done him some good and sold him a record or 2 in the 50s!
I've also heard he held up all his Bluegrass Boys on a big ol' beam, just to see if he could. He was big and STRONG and not to be toyed with I hear!
Buddy, that took guts!
