2 D
3 B
4 G
5 D
6 B
7 G
Instead of the high "G" you could put a low
"D" on the bottom.
Either way it is the bluegrass tuning with an
extra string to play around with.

| IF you want to try something new, put an e in the middle: GBdegbd'. You'll have a little trouble avoiding that string when you don't want it, but it gives you a minor chord, the 6th tuning sounds if you want them, and a LOT of new slants and substitutions. |

I second John K's motion for the G6 tuning. A friend of mine uses that tuning on his Melobro 7 and I love it.
I don't think you'll like the tone of that .012 high G if you stick with G major.
My two cents.

I'd probably tune it G D G A B D G.
That way, you have 1 5 1 on the bottom, and 1 on the top, like D or E tuning.
The G on top is *GREAT*. For one thing, it gives you the same note as the 5th string on a 5-string banjo. It also gives you forward slants on the B and high G for parallel 6ths.
The G A B gives you the 1 2 3 of the scale, which, 7 frets higher, becomes 5 6 7.[This message was edited by Pete Grant on 05 February 2003 at 03:03 PM.] |
