This is my first post in this section so please excuse my ignorance. Today at my favorite music store they showed me a very beaten-up single neck 8-string Fender non-pedal steel with the pickups and a lot of other parts missing. The guy said he wanted to restore it and maybe put bass guitar pickups in it since normal guitar pickups are too short. I said no no no, let me get some info first. The guitar looks very old, dark brown finish that is peeling off. It has two routings for pickups with round edges. In the bottom there are three sockets where the legs can be screwed in. The guy said the legs were identical with those for the Rhodes piano. I might be interested in getting that guitar for myself, so does anyone have any suggestions where I could get a set of pickups? They also asked me what it might be worth and I replied, in the U.S. it would be no more than $ 500 in good condition, or is that way too high? How can one tell how old it is? If necessary, I´ll take another look at it and try to give some more details.
Thanks for any info,
Joe H. |

Yes,
Lollar will rewind or sell replacements for the Sringmaster style pickups. Check his website. First class products and service.
IF it were in great shape, all the stuff working, a case, the legs, tuners, it might bring $500-$600.
John Tipton, a forumite, has a great website on Stringmasters including schematics. |

Being Brown and does it have a black case that comes with it?? if so..than it's from the 60's...I'd have to see it to give the exact year....or you can look on the wood under the tuning pan...but alot of the 60's fenders didn't have it written there anymore...and sometimes under the pickup plate.
That guitar as it is is worth no more than a 100.00 bucks.

Well, now I know that guitar must be a Deluxe 8, probably from the ´60s. Pickups would also be available from Seymour Duncan ("Antiquity Stringmaster"). From the information I´ve gathered until now by doing a little search and also John Tipka´s very fine website, I think it´s safe to say that restoring it would be more expensive than what one would have to pay for a guitar like that in good original condition. As I said, there are a lot of parts missing, it really looks as if someone butchered it for spare parts. I´m not sure if it´ll be worth all the trouble,
I´d prefer a double or triple neck Stringmaster anyway.
Thanks to all who replied,

What is the address for John Tipka's website?
Whenever I try to bring it up, I get an error message.
