I ordered a Little Roy Model and it came today. How should I tune it? I play dobro a little and U12 pedal steel some.

If you're familiar with the open G tuning used by most Dobro® players, I'd recommend G6 (bass to treble):

G B D E G B D E

Probably the two most common tunings are C6/Am7:

A C E G A C E G

and E6/7:

B D E G# B C# E G#

You could also try A6:

The following is on JB's outside neck of his D-8.

E
C
A
G
E
C#
C
A (low, low A)

Incidently he has NO 8th string on his inside neck. Because is it his diatonic tuning:

E
C
B
A
G
F
E

For the life of me, I have never been able to figure out why he does not use an 8th string on it and tune it to C on this tuning. But he insists any other string would mess up this tuning. Try as I may, I don't get it. But then he is the master so that is good enough for me.

I'd be interested in what you think of the sound of the Wiggins. I heard that the guy who designed it did some research to try to come up with the tone that Wiggins got on those Eddy Arnold records. If no one has listened to those old 40s and 50s classics like "I'll hold you in my heart," and "Bouquet of Roses," I'd recommend them if you want to hear some beautiful steel playing.

Carl,

I always enjoy your posts. They are very informative and helpful.

One question concerning the low, low A JB uses on the 8-string C6/A7 tuning on the 8th string: What gauge for a 22-1/2 inch scale? I also have a Sierra lap steel with 24-1/2 inch scale, which I would like to tune to the low A. Your help is appreciated.

God bless,

oj hicks

I use the same tuning on one of my guitars, and I use a .068 gauge for the low A. You can get some real 'bluesy' sounds with that tuning.
