I'm seeking preferences of gauges for the plain strings, E,C,A used in the C6th tuning on a 22&1/2" scale guitar.

On E, do you prefer .014 or .015?

On C, do you prefer .017 or .018?

On A, do you prefer .020, .021, or .022?
And on this note, do you ever use a small wound string for Hawaiian music?

Many thanks for those taking time to respond. I respect the opinions of every forum member and take your opinions to heart.

015., .018, .022

Funny how much difference a thousandth of an inch can make; for my guitar and my hands (and the sound I want), a .016 is too heavy and a .014 is too light.

I wonder if anybody's thought of taking quality strings out to the fourth decimal place...I have a lightly built acoustic guitar, and I use an .0115 for the high e'. It's perfect; an .011 is too light, and an .012 is too heavy. I wonder if they made an .01175 would that be even better?

I use really heavy strings on my Strats and tune down a half step so I can do bends. I use a cleaner sound than most guys because the tone cuts right thru. This point of reference I call my "Stevie Ray Vaughn Mo Tone".

Because of this understanding, I crave thick tone. On my 6 String 22.5 steel tuned to C6th, I use the heavy side of the string gauge equation:

E .016
C .020
A .024
G .028
E .036
C .042

I would use lighter gauges if I wanted to have a particular instrument be able to access closely related tunings/string gauges.

Thanks again to all replying.

For as long as I've been playing I've never used strings this heavy (.016") for the E.

Maybe I've learned something. Almost always, it pays to ask questions.

That is a "Slingerland Steel Guitar" magnet I made for Sage Harmos ... as a prototype ...

I've never seen one before ... I hear they were the first "Humbucker" ... made back in '39 ????
