Making a nut(?) What material?

Post by Don McClellan »

Hi, I'm making a 12 string lap steel and I'm ready for the nut. What should I use? Does someone out there make them for sale? Thanks, Don

Being you live on the Islands, I would use a Image macadamia nut Image<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Gary Lynch on 27 December 2006 at 03:39 PM.]</p></FONT><font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Gary Lynch on 27 December 2006 at 03:39 PM.]</p></FONT>

Don,

Fender's guitar nuts are made from urea formaldehyde The material called melamine formaldehyde is very similar, and is the material that "Melmac" dishware is made from. If you can locate an old Melmac bowl with a thick bottom, it is ideal for making a nut.

Nathan, The guitar is being made out of tight grained fur. I know its not the most desirable wood for lap steels (and I don't know why) but I made an 8 stringer out of the same wood and its sounds great. It has a GeorgeL pickup and a brass bridge. The nut on my eight stringer is made of moose antler. Mooseses are hard to come by on Maui. If you've ever listened to any of the MP3s I've posted on NoPeddlers they were all done on the 8 stringer I made from fur lumber 2x4s. Thanks, Don

Most any hard plastic will work. Bakelite or brass. Corian counter top plastic is nice.

I make a roller nut from string ends. Go to robroguitar.com for a look.
