I have an old lap steel that I am refinishing because it is in real bad shape. I cleaned all of the grunge off of it and noticed that the decal on the peg head moved around when I got it wet. I wander if I can get the decal wet and slide it off onto some thing and save it to put back on the guitar. Any ideas?

Thanks
Colby

If you saw it move, then what about the slick paper material they originally came on (maybe glass)? The wetting and drying process can weaken the decal. I would do both slowly, especially drying the decal.

As a model railroader, I do a lot of work with decals. The are usually very delicate. If you try removing them onto the type of sheet they originally came on they usually split. Plus, if you don't slide them straight onto the material they will fold over and you'll have a lot of trouble flattening them out.

But in the time since you posted this question the decal must have dried out again, anyway.

Which decal is it ? You can get new decals for some models.

It is an OAHU decal, it did tear into when trying to transfer it to a piece of decal paper.

If anyone knows where to obtain new Oahu decals let us know. I have two 1930's student models.
