I'm trying to transfer all my Outlook Express messages from my old computer to my new one. I copied all the relative .dbx files to a cd, but can't get Outlook to import them. What am I doing wrong?

Did you copy them to the folder where OE is located? If not, try that.

I copied them to the folder where they were on the other machine, which is a folder way down under "Documents and Settings", but that didn't seem to do it.

The Dell forum is down and I can't get the procedure for you right now, to see if it's the same as you have.

There programs that claim to save all email. However, you can do it with free abilities in Outlook. If you use some other email program, I can't help you. Look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q270670

This tells you exactly how to do it. If you intend to move these files to another computer, copy the folder where you saved the email folder and put it into the other computer. Then use the import function in Outlook Express to restore the information to the Local email folder in the new computer. There is some additional information at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q276511

Have fun.<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Robert Leaman on 25 November 2006 at 08:07 AM.]</p></FONT>

I figured it out. Outlook Express doesn't like "Read Only" files. I copied all the files to a temporary folder, made sure they weren't "Read Only" and Outlook Express imported all of them.

Bill;
Thanks for sharing that tip about Outlook Express not importing read-only dbx files.

When you burn a CD, most of the time, the files will be converted to "read only" and when you copy them back to a hard drive you must change the attributes back.

This is especially true with packet writing programs (most unreliable) such as Nero's InCD, Roxio's Direct CD or in later versions Drag to Disc or Sonic's DLA.

One last thing. Click on the little button that says "Import from OE6 store directory" in the Import Wizard dialog box. That has something to do with the identity number assigned by Outlook. You don't want to import the identity number from the old computer.
Thanks for all the input, guys. It's amazing what you have to learn when you get yourself a new "confuser".<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Bill Bosler on 28 November 2006 at 03:18 AM.]</p></FONT>

Would that be the same thing as a "Personal Confuser" as coined by Leo LaPorte of TechTv?
