Grisoft has just released it's newest incarnation of their free anti virus product; version 7.5.x. It replaces the current version 7.1.x which will be discontinued this coming January (2007). All users of AVG Free are urged to upgrade to the new version as soon as possible, then update it. There are updates for the new version that are not available for v7.1.

I have more information about the new version on my blog.

The download page for the newest version of AVG Free is here

Note;
You must be an administrator to upgrade AVG, so log onto an administrator account before wasting your time trying to upgrade from a Limited or Power User account. You must reboot after installing the new version and will probably have to tell your firewall that the changes are ok and expected, to allow AVG to connect to the Internet for updates.

The AVG Resident shield isn't working yet in Vista RC1. There are bugs to be worked out before Vista ships. Hopefully Microsoft will share the required API details with security vendors like Grisoft, so that they can do their job.

Wiz,
I have tried two times to upgrade AVG
( free) to V 7.5 and both times it has failed . My first attempt was last evening and ,it went through the entire install but the last box said something about an error and a courpt file . That install attempt failed .

Today the install went all the way to # 4 on the installation page and when I selected that and went to "next" that attempt also failed .Error of some sort .

Would you be kind enough to give me some advise/ help on this problem ? Should I remove the current version of AVG first then try the upgrade install ?
I do have administrator priviledges and run XP HOME . I have a very slow dialup system currently, so it is taking over an hour for the install to run it's course and still it will not complete. My current AVG v 7.1 seems to be operating ok still so I assume I am still covered by it but I would like to get the upgrade too as you have recommended .

Wiz- I want to thank you for all you do to help an old computer dummy like me on this fine Forum! I appreciate it !!

I'm sure everyone on here appreciates all the time and helpful advise you give on the Forum.

John

John;
Download the file and save it to disk, so you don't have to waste time downloading it again.

When you install it use the Repair option. If this fails to update it you may have to uninstall the previous version, leaving your user settings in place if prompted. Reboot, then install the new version using the standard install option, if asked. Reboot and check the version. It should be the new one and will look different than the old one.

Wiz,
It failed again . I removed the original version 7.1 and trier reinstalling the v7.5
and this shows up at the end :

" ERROR- installation files are corrupt -please download a fresh copy and retry the installation " then on the close window this appears " CRC failed in files.dat -unexpected end of archive "

Guess I'm doing something wrong!

Wiz-- sorry to bother you again ! I have no AVG now so I'm wide open to "trouble" virus wise, I expect !

Maybe I should try reinstalling the version
7.1 in order to continue protection from virus/s ??

Thanks again for your advise and help !

John;
Reinstall 7.1 if you feel vulnerable, then delete the downloaded v7.5 and go back to Grisoft.com and download it again. Your download was corrupted, probably by fragmentation caused by slow dialup speeds and resent block errors. This happens a lot with dialup Internet connections. You might want to look into tweaking your modem settings to get the best throughput. See my article titled modems-101 for more information about dialup modems. You can check your actual data throughput on my baudrate test page.

Wiz,
Well finally !!! I now have the new AVG ( free) version 7.5 upgrade! I wanted to thank you again for all your help and to pass on a site I found that went through all the download and install without a "hitch".

I'm sure you are familar with it --kind of a long link but if you feel it approperate, Lee Baucum might try this link since he seems to be having trouble like I did.

Here it is and it takes you directly to the new version and the download activation :
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

Note that the dash (_) is lower than the rest after the # 2239 and also that certain letters are in caps within the link .

Thanks again ! I really appreciate your help and advise!

Simple question - since installing the new version I get this annoying "AVG email scanner" pop-up every time Thunderbird search for new emails. I can't find where to turn it off, neither in AVG nor in Thunderbird, I know it should be possible because I used to have it turned off - any tips? I hate that little pop-up every two minutes....

Here is what you need to do to turn off the scanning email notice.

Double-click on the AVG Systray icon. AVG Control Panel opens.

Double-click on Email Scanner. > Email Scanner Properties box opens.

On the Plugins (opening) page click on Properties. On the bottom of the Properties page are two checkboxes, under the section labeled "Progress." Uncheck both of them (Show notfication icon and Show information window) and click OK to close out all configuration boxes.

Thanks Wiz - there IS no "Email Scanner" showed in the Control Center, only "Test Center", "Help Topics" and "Check For Updates". Nothing in the Test Center either, so this is very strange..
Perhaps I should uninstall it and do a clean install?

Steiner;
LOL!
Look to the right side of the AVG Control Panel, at the bottom of the list of services. You should see Email Scanner at the bottom of that list. Double-click on the name in the list. This is new in version 7.5. You can press the F4 key to switch to the standard "extended mode" view, where you see individual boxes for each module. F3 switches back to the new "reduced mode" view.

Well I have similar problem.

I have updated to AVG7.5 and get the email popups. I also wanted to remove them and somehow I have been able to turn email off. But when I check the control centre there are only six boxes (Antivirus, scheduler , resident shield, virus vault, update manager and shell extension. There is no email. but there is now a red exclamation mark saying that a red highlighted component is in error state, BUT there is no red highlighted component.

So what have I done wrong and how do I correct it?

Colin;
First of all, do you indeed have a default email client configured? These include Outlook (Express), Thunderbird, Eudora, etc.

Assuming you have an email client configured the indication is that AVG did not install completely. There is a repair installtion option in the new setup file. Find your AVG 7.5 setup file and run it from an Administrator level account, using the Repair Option. If this fails to include email scanning try again using the option to add components. If neither of these paths corrects the problem, uninstall AVG, reboot, reinstall AVG and reboot.

Let me know how this plays out for you. AVG has a free help forum for it's users, located at: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/ and the forum dealing with installation issues is at: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/list.php?2

Be sure you read Sticky:PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING - AVG Forum How to Ask for Help, then create an account and post your question/problems.

Note to Windows Vista RC testers

The AVG Team has determined that there is a bug in AVG Free build 7.5.428 that prevents the Resident Shield from running in Windows Vista RC1 and RC2. The problem has been fixed and the fix will be available in the next release of AVG Free.

If you are using the XP SP2 compatibility mode to be able to have a Resident Shield protection on Vista, please make sure to reinstall AVG Free in the normal mode when the fix is ready to get full performace and support for your operating system.

Lee;
It appears that you have ownership issues in your Registry. From your Administrator level account go to Run > Regedit (Enter) to enter the Registry. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Classes, right click on "Classes" and select "Permissions." The Permissions box will open. See if your identity is listed in the top section. If it is click once to highlight it then look in the lower section to see if you are allowed full control. If not, check the Full Control box under the "Allow" column.

If you do not see your identity listed, but you know you are logged in as an Administrator, look for Administrators on top and click once on it. See if Administrators have full control, and enable it if necessary. Click Apply if you make any changes. If Administrators is not listed you can add the group by clicking on the "Add" button, then type Administrators into the input field in the "Select Users or Groups" box. Click on "Check Names" to get the full path, then on OK. Find Administrators in the top section of the Permissions list, highlight it, then assign Full Control in the checkbox options. Click Apply, then OK, to close out the Permissions box.

Having assigned full control to either your identity or the Administrators group, click on the Advanced button, under the Permissions section. Click on Owner and see if Administrators is the owner. If not, "take ownership" for either Administrators or your own identity (if listed).

You may want to do this for each top level branch (HKEY_) of the Registry, especially the HKLM branch, to ensure that you can write to the Registry as an Administrator.

Now close the Registry Editor, log off, then log on. Try to install AVG again and let me know if you succeed.
