On August 8, 2006 Microsoft released critical update MS06-049, which fixed a vulnerability in Windows kernel could allow elevation of privilege (and computer takeover). Unfortunately, this patch contained a faulty component that cause corruption in some Windows 2000 computers running SP4 and using file compression on NTFS formatted drives. Microsoft has been working on fixing the file compression corruption problem and just now released an updated patch, re-releasing it under the same Advisory number.
The updated MS Advisory is here. The Hotfix file download page is here.
If you have Windows 2000 computers online you should get this hotfix.

Jody asked if this patch applies to Windows 98 S.E.
Jody, and all others still running Windows 98 computer that connect to the Internet;
No, this patch does not apply to you, nor does any further patch that will be developed by Microsoft. All patches for vulnerabilities, or Windows components, or browser updates for your operating system ceased production in July of 2006. You are at risk from browser exploits released after July 11, 2006, if you use Internet Explorer 5.5 or newer, but there is little you can do, aside from not using Internet Explorer as your browser, or Outlook Express to do email (it renders html using the IE engine).
I would suggest that you switch to Mozilla Firefox for your browser and Mozilla Thunderbird for your email client. Since Microsoft is no longer issuing any patches or updates for any part of Windows 95, 98, 98 S.E, or Millenium, there is absolutely no logical reason to browse with Internet Explorer, or open emails in Outlook (Express), under any of those operating systems. You are putting yourself and the Internet community at risk because your OS is not being patched anymore against the constant onslaught of spyware, keyloggers, rootkits, email relays and proxy servers.
I would not place a Windows 98 computer on the Internet anymore.
