We have some DVDs of the band that are one continuous track. I'd like to clip out some video segments and post them to the internet.
How can I do that? I've never edited video before, but I assume it's not too different from audio...

Cinematize. For the slicing/dicing you mentioned you wouldn't need the Pro version.
DVDs are muxed, so you can't edit the video directly. You need something to de-mux the VIDEO_TS contents, which Cinematize does with no loss of quality. If you then wanted to add title sequences or transitions to the extracted file you could edit the Cinematize output in iDVD, which is limited but effective.
If you don't want to spend the bucks, there are several freeware/shareware programs (Handbrake, ffmpegX, Mac The Ripper, etc.) for OS X that will do basic extraction, just not as elegantly or nicely as Cinematize.
If you have the non-DVD video source files, it would be easier to edit those. Otherwise, you'll need to extract from DVD and then edit.[This message was edited by Jeff Agnew on 22 August 2006 at 05:41 AM.] |

Oops. Joey's comment reminded me - I meant to say edit in iMovie, not iDVD. Duh. |

I just purchased DVDXDV software, $30 on line, Paypal.
I used it to edit the commercials out of a TV movie I had on DVD. Worked great.
This software converts the DVD to .mov format, which imports into iMovie for editing.
You then send it to iDVD to burn a new DVD.
The DVDXDV software also allows you to preview and select the section you want to convert.
I'm happy with it.
BTW, all this was done on my G4 Powerbook. 1.25 MHz, 765 KB.
