I have taken some digital videos and transferred them to my computer as *.asf files. When I open Windows Media Player to play them, however, it says that I don't have a certain file. The specific message is:
Quote:
The audio codec identified by the format tag 45 is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help.

When I click for Web Help it takes me someplace to download the file, which I did (twice). In the process, it says to save the file in "an appropriate location". What the heck does that mean?? I tried my desktop, but it didn't find it or recognize it. I put another copy of it in the same folder as the *.asf file I want to play: didn't help. Put it in same folder with the Windows Media Player too, and that didn't help either.

I did notice when downloading the file, that it says that this file is "no longer signed by Microsoft" and that MS had a workaround for it, and gave a link to click for the workaround, which ended up being a dead link!

Frustrating! Anybody have any suggestions for solutions?

Thanks,
Jim

I learned on the Microsoft Help and Support site that "The only difference between ASF files and WMV or WMA files are the file extensions and the MIME types. The MIME type for a WMV file is video/x-ms-wmv, and for WMA it is audio/x-ms-wma. The MIME type for ASF is video/x-ms-asf. The basic internal structure of the files is identical."

It might be interesting to simply rename one of your .asf files and change the extension to .wmv and see if Media Player can play it.

The only other thing I can think of that might be the problem is that those .asf files might require some proprietary codec, and it that's the case, you might get more information on the website of whovever made the video camera.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave. I tried changing the suffix to *.wmv but it didn't help; it still complained about needing that file. Would you (or anyone else) be willing to let me email you a (small) *.asf file and see if it opens on your system?

Sure, Jim, I'll try it. I don't have my email address here on the forum; I'll send you an email and you'll have it that way. Send me the file.

Jim, I sent you an email yesterday. Not sure why it didn't get through. I forwarded it to you again just now. Is the email address here on the forum the correct one?
