My G4 WILL NOT burn a CD at 1x anymore...it would for 5 years with no problem but the slowest it will burn now is 8x...I use this machine for Pro Tools and as you know,the slower the better for audio...I started having this problem after I bought a LaCie USB Porsche external HD for storage...anybody know what could cause this?
Oh yeah-I'm using Toast...

What happens when you select the 1X burn speed? Does Toast maintain the setting but burn at 8X anyway? Or does the setting not stick?
Which version of Toast and which version of OS X?
Questions, questions. You might try deleting Toast's .plist and preferences files, then launch again and let Toast recreate them. |

On "Windows PC's" if you try to set the burn speed in the CD Burning programs before you load a blank CD-R, it will only show the maximum burn speed of the drive and won't allow you to chnage it. You have to have the CD-R blank loaded in order to change the burn speed.
FWIW, many newer drives will not even burn at 1X (not an option). Some won't burn at 2X either. I use 4X as my "master standard". CD Burner technology has come a long way from the early days and the 1X and 2X burning speeds. However, even on my instrumental CD's that I sell, I use 8X as my "standard" so they will be compatible an play on most any audio CD player. Any faster and some (older) audio CD players will have problems playing them. |

Jeff,I'm still in OS9 and Toast is 5 Titanium...the machine would burn at 1x for years...it seems that when I plugged in the LaCie,that's when my problems started...when I try to burn at 6x or slower,I get an error message(Interface failed -9356 connection not stable)and then the Mac freezes...thanks!
I think I'll just delete Toast and reinstall it...

I think it's the media(blank CDs)!I just don't think the new 52x cds are supported by my old dinosaur mac/burner...Still can't figure out why it won't burn at 4x...thanks,Jeff and Jack.

Steve the blanks may be an issue. Newer CD burners have a higher intensity Laser. But, when you do a CD burn, the first thing the burner does is "calibrate" the Laser for the specific blank it's using.
But, I'd still try a different brand or batch of CD's. Avoid Memorex as they tend to be flakey. |

Wow. OS 9 and Toast 5. Forget what I said about a .plist file 
Sometimes the 9356 error is a symptom of an INIT conflict. Did you install any LaCie software? That might have changed the INIT loading order. If you're familiar with renaming INITs or have Conflict Catcher on your system, try moving the DAO INIT later in the boot sequence. It should load after the Apple CD INIT.
I can walk you through a troubleshooting procedure but it would get tedious via the forum. Send me an e-mail and we can exchange phone info if you'd like. |
