On 11 October 2005 Microsoft is planning to release:
Security Updates
. 8 Microsoft Security Bulletins affecting Microsoft Windows. The
highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. Some of these
updates will require a restart. These updates will be detectable
using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) and the
Enterprise Scanning Tool (EST).
. 1 Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows and
Microsoft Exchange. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is
Important. These updates will require a restart. These updates will
be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).
Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
. Microsoft will release an updated version of the Microsoft Windows
Malicious Software Removal Tool on Windows Update, Microsoft Update,
Windows Server Update Services and the Download Center.
Note that this tool will NOT be distributed using Software Update
Services (SUS).
Non-security High Priority updates on MU, WU, WSUS and SUS
. Microsoft will release NO new NON-SECURITY High-Priority Updates
for Windows on Microsoft Update (MU), Windows Update (WU), Windows
Server Update Services (WSUS) and Software Update Services (SUS).
Although we do not anticipate any changes, the number of bulletins,
products affected, restart information and severities are subject to
change until released.
All PC users are strongly encouraged to turn ON Automatic Windows Updates to receive these as they are released. Otherwise, be sure you check for Windows Updates manually, using Internet Explorer.

I urgently advise anybody running Windows 2000 or newer to run Windows Update - NOW, for critical patches! Do not wait until Monday. A vulnerability on the scale of the one that allowed the Blaster Worm to propagate has been patched with the October 11 updates. Exploits are in the wild that can take over all unpatched Windows 2000, XP and Server 2000-2003 computers. Do not become a statistic.
It has been reported that some computers are having negative reactions to the hotfix patch that closes the vulnerability mentioned above. If this happens to your computer follow these instructions to restore normal functionality:
To resolve any problems caused by the MS05-051 patch, users should restore the default permissions for the Windows folder and the COM+ catalog. A guide is available on the Microsoft Web site, and steps start with changing the permissions on the "registration" folder in the Windows directory.
In a nutshell, the default permissions that need to be restored to the %WinDir\Registration directory are:
Everyone: Read and List Contents of Directory
Administrator: Full Control
System: Full Control

I downloaded the updates today and it killed my network!!!
When I turned off the computer (I use XP Pro) the button came up for Turn Off that defaulted to Windows Update or you could click a Turn Off Without Downloading.
Now my network is dead!!!
We have 8 computers at work hooked up to network DSL and the two using XP Pro had their network connection destroyed!
Is this related???

Here are links to the Microsoft Knowledgebase, for two articles dealing with negative effects from applying hotfix MS05-051. The first has extensive Permissions details to repair or avoid these problems.

Microsfoft is offering free technical phone assistance* to registered users of Windows 2000 and XP Professional, who have suffered networking or logon problems after applying this hotfix. The problem only seems to affect systems that have the default permissions altered, on the Windows (or Winnt) and Windows\Registration directories. See my post above for the correct permissions.
* Customers who experience installation issues should contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Product Support Services in North America can be contacted for help with security update issues or viruses at no charge by using the PC Safety line (1-866-PCSAFETY).
