Real Player keeps accessing the net. Is this typical of this software???????

My firewall keeps asking if I want it to access the net, and I reply NO.

Is it calling Home?

Thanks
Joe

The default configuration periodically checks for updated versions of the software.

Real Player can be a pain in the butt. It is on the "ill behaving" software list (along with Quicktime). Some versions of RP, even tho you configure it to do or not do certain things will still do it.

I know several "techies" that will not have RealPlayer or Quicktime on their PC's because of their "independent" nature of doing whatever they want.

I don't have Real Player or QuickTime on any of my computers, for security and privacy reasons.

The thing you have to {buffering...} is that sometimes when RealPlayer tries to {buffering...} and then all you can do is {buffering...} .

I don't have problems with real player. it is useful for listening to music files on certain sites. Quicktime however has control over my pc and it is a pain. I would say also that the audio quality is the poorest of the 3 (WMP, RP, QT). I forgeot why I downloaded it but maybe it's high time I trash it.

How do you get rid of Real Player and Quick time? Does it affect other programs? I tried it and it said if I delete or uninstall it , it might affect other programs. I don't like that so I just left it alone, though I never use it....al

Al, not only did i delete Qtime but i found a 20mg file for itunes (which requires W2000 or xp) that I deleted also. I don't recall how I got rid of Qtime. I may have unistalled it. The other I just dragged to the trash. I did a utility scan after and had no pc errors to fix. If you have a registry and file repair program then you might not worry about shared files as the repair program most likely will fix them. Do so at your own risk, though. I am not a pro, I'm just at the point where I don't worry, I just try to repair after. Whenever I find an AOL file hanging around somewhere I delete it and run a scan.

RealPlayer and Quicktime can be removed without affecting any other program. Although they "infest" other files, once they are uninstalled and Windows restarted it's usually all that's required.

Use the Windows Add or Remove programs to do an "orderly" uninstall of the programs.

I use Media Player Classic to play Real music files. It's a basic media player that looks like the old Windows ver6 Media Player. It's from SourceForge that makes CDex a CD Ripper that i'm about to download and try. http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

Jack,

Just now I went to add/remove and tried to remove QuickTime and a warning flag popped up and said:
"Removing QT system extensions can cause
application malfunctions. Click UNINSTALL to remove the applications that came with QT. Click UNINSTALL EVERYTHING to remove the system extensions as well [not recommended]"

Seems obvious what the practical move would be, but what is your take?

If those system extensions are retained, can they still cause all the problems that full blown QT does?

One thing that irks me about QT, is that there doesn't seem to be a way to delete it from RUN/STARTUP - like it's not listed.
I think I have it on, because something I wanted to hear/see could only be accessed thru QT.

I'm running XP.

That seems to be a "stock" warning. They want to "scare" you into not removing QT.
Obviously if you remove QT and had some QT media files then they wouldn't work.

In a way it's like the Windows warning "Are you sure you want to do this". It gives you an option in case you accidentally did something you didn't want to do.

The worst misbehaving program I've run into yet is MusicMatch Jukebox. Talk about a @#$%^*&^ to remove. Real player was about as miserable.

What kind of MMJB problem did you have? I've been using MMJB for a long time and have the registered "Plus" version.

Some had trouble upgrading to the latest V10, but uninstalling and doing a complete reinstall usually fixes that.

MMJB has an option to "recover file types" and if that is checked, everytime you run MMJB it will set itself as the default media player for all file types. I always uncheck that so I can control that myself and that's been the ONLY issue.

Most media players want to install themselves as the default player for all media types, you have to not select that option when it installs or deselect what you don't want after the program installs. WinAmp is the same way (and it looks like WinAmp is not getting the needed support since it's now owned by AOL).

Thanks Jack.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, when something says it has to be played thru QT, is this NOT true. Will some other media player I have on the pc just step in and play the file [like WMP]?

Seems like when it said you needed QT, I just downloaded, not thinking about what a pain it would turn out to be.

QT files are proprietary (just like RealPlayer "ra" files). You need QT for those files. I have only run across a few sites that required RealPlayer or QT but I really didn't miss much by not having them installed.

A lot of sites that have video, have options for Windows or one of the other players and you select what you have. Almost all the video clips that I've got attached to e-mails are all Windows Media files.
