I have a lot of BIAB songs that somehow were put over to Winamp and play in Winamp. How can I get them back into Band in a Box where I can edit them. They were original BIAB songs so I want to get them out of winamp to change keys, tempos, etc....al

Al just click open underneath the file menu in BIAB I doubt if they were actually ported to win amp rather win amp just put it's brand on them being they were saved as a SMF. BIAB will open up any SMF. Good luck and let us know how it comes out, but I might add that if you're editing your midi files in BIAB you are missing the boat. Try using another app like sonar or even BIAB Pro Tracks Pro. BIAB is a very limited midi file editor :-)

Thanks Bob for your info. How do I do that? the songs play in Winamp. They are BIAB melodies and chords etc, but how can I transfer or find them in BIAB with all its features. In Winamp, I can't change the Key or the tempo. I'll have to admit that I am dumb about BIAB or the computer for that matter.I dont know how it happened but I dont want them just to playin Winamp, I need to make some changes to the chords etc, there is about 50 of them old tunes that I want to play along with .Thanks againl..al

Al if the BIAB song files are in the BIAB directory, all you need to do, in BIAB, is click on the "open" Icon or click File then Open (BB song) and you will get a list of what songs you have.
As mentioned if the songs were converted to a format other than MIDI so you can play them on a Media Player there's a good chance the original BIAB (MIDI) file is still there. |

Sorry Al, that I wasn't more specific heres what you can do.
1. At the very top of biab go to the left side and click on the file menu button it actually says "file"
2. click on (open BB song...)that will take you to the last folder where you saved any biab songs that you created. If they are in there just click on them and they will open them in biab.
3. If they are not there then you can look at the top of that menu and you'll see a little picture of a folder with an arrow pointing upwards. Click on it and it will take you to the main biab folder and you can browse thru all of the biab folders and files and look in them and see if they are in there. If you see them in there just click on them to open them up in biab.
Hopefully you will find them in there if not go to step 4.
4. Do a search on your computer and type the name of the songs in the search box and when you locate them go to biab file menu and click on open midi file then navigate to the folder that you found in your search and click on them and they will open up in biab.
Or if you want to just right click on the midi files that you find in your windows search window and select "open with" it will then give you a choice of apps that windows thinks will open midi files. If biab isn't in the list select open with other and navigate to the root level of your system folder. (just double click on your computer icon on your desktop and then double click on your C drive then navigate to the folder in there named "bb" in that folder you will find an icon of biab click on it) and viola the midi files will open up in biab.
If you don't know how to do a windows search let us know and we'll walk you thru that process it's a whole other walk thru for it as well. Good luck and let us know how things are coming along.

I just tried some of the suggestions and still cant get the Winamp MP3 files to change over to BIAB where they originated.
I found the songs but they are in Winamp, is there a switch program or something? They are acutal BIAB backup songs, but they are only playing in Winamp, where I cant change the Key or Tempo.....al

Hi Al, this is the first time that you have mentioned that they are MP3 files. Did you take the time to convert them to MP3 files or was you just referring to them as MP3 files because they were being played by winamp?
Thats a real important question because winamp will play midi files as well as MP3 files and some how we need to find out if your songs have actually been converted into MP3 files or if they are still midi/biab files.
So before we go any farther please respond and let me know exactly what happened after you made the songs in biab then I can go ahead and try to help you.

Hi Bob-Thanks again for your time and patience. I don't know if they are MP3 or Midi. I just figured they played in Winamp , so they must be Mp3.
I believe now that they might be some that A Friend of mine sent over some songs on a CD and they played in Winamp.
But they are BIAB songs to play along with.
I want to switch them back over to BIAB so I can change tempos and Keys on some. Do you know of any way I can do that? Is there a computer sofware program that will do that?
I have version 12 BIAB right now. Thanks again....al

Well Al, there's plenty of ways to get the songs back into biab but you will actually have to find the folder that they are in. Did you ever find them? If not I may have to walk you thru a search for them. It's not to hard. I'm thinking that when you find them you can just open them up in biab.

Bob-Thanks again. I followed your advice and I looked through all the folders that said BB in them and did find some that I didn't see before.
I don't know yet if they are the same version that is in Winamp.
I'll just have to play them and compare if they are the same, if not, I still want to transfer the Winamp Biab songs back to BIAB form. I sure appreciate your help and hope we are on the Homestretch....al

Al if those files are biab song files they will have the extension ".SGU" at the end of the file name(unless you set the "view folders" in windows explorer to hide file extensions). The mp3 files will show the ".mp3" after the file name.

Ok Al, if they are not the same version that you need then we will walk you thru a search on windows so you can find them and get them back into biab. Like I said it's not hard to do a search :-)

Hi Al, just in case here's a walk thru for performing a windows search
-----------------------------------------
To search for a file or folder
Click Start, and then click Search.
Click All files and folders.
Important
If you do not see All files and folders, you have probably changed your default search behavior.
Click Change preferences.
Click Change files and folders search behavior.
Click Standard, and then click OK.
Click All files and folders.
Type part or all of the name of the file or folder, or type a word or phrase that is in the file.
If you do not know either piece of information or want to narrow your search further, select one or more of the remaining options:
In Look in, click the drive, folder, or network you want to search.
Click When was it modified? to look for files that were created or modified on or between specific dates.
Click What size is it? to look for files of a specific size.
Click More advanced options to specify additional search criteria.
Click Search.
Notes
If you get too many results, try using additional search criteria to make your search more specific.
For information about changing the appearance of Search Companion, click Related Topics.

Not exactly but he did mention that he was using biab vs 12 so that pretty much rules out Mac and Older windows OS's so I'm betting it's XP Hope I'm not wrong hee hee.

Hi Guys-If I can't get all those files now with all this good advice, and Bob your step by step search, then I really must be a computer dummy!
Earnest, I have Xp,pentium 4, 500mb ram, 80gbt drive.
John, I see the mgu ext., but some are MP3 so they must be winamp songs. Some are WAV.
But what is confusing me is the Biab songs in Winamp just play in winamp and don't show the Biab Chords, etc. The must be the ones sent to me on a CD to play along with, If I put the original CD in, playing in Winamp, can I then make them go back to Biab version, showing the chords ,etc.? Thanks ....al

Al, it sounds like the CD you got were "BIAB generated songs" but are not in the BIAB format. They were probably "rendered" to wav files from BIAB (it has that capability) and then burned to a CD.
Looking at my BIAB, it doesn't appear there is any way, in BIAB, to get them back to MIDI format.
You should go back to whoever gave you the CD and have them burn a CD of the actual BIAB files and then you can use them in your BIAB. |

Hi Al, in my opinon Jack is 100% correct and if he is there is no way to ever turn the MP3's back into midi files. There are apps that claim to do this but so far they are all very limited and only work with monophonic files (one not at a time) and even then very limited.
Hopefully you can get the songs from the original source before they were turned into a MP3..
How many songs are we talking about Al? If it's not to many I would be willing to help make some new ones for you.

Al, the ".MGU" file extension is not a song file. It is a sample "style" which is supplied with biab. The styles are used to make biab songs by adding the chords. Then they will be saved as ".SGU" song files.

.MGU is not a style file. The extension for a style file is .STY
An .MGU file is a .SGU that has data in it's Melody Track.

Mystery Solved!
Al sent me one of his files and they are MIDI files ".mid" not MP3 or wav files.
They will play in BIAB. Just open BIAB, click File then "play MIDI file"...
Apparently Al's Winamp is set as the "default" player for MIDI files and the reason Winamp comes up and plays them when he selects one of the files from the CD. |

I am going to try this and see how it goes. But these Winamp files(songs) are not on a CD now, they are already loaded in my Hard Drive. Thanks again...al
