We have an older (5 yrs?) CRT monitor that keeps changing color from regular to wierd purple haze, then back again, about every minute or so, but irregularly so. When I looked at the multipin connector, I noticed that one of the pins is missing! Would this cause color changes? Since the cord is hard-wired into the monitor, it would be a shame to throw the whole dang thing away just because a tiny pin broke or fell out! If this is the reason for the color shifts, can I perhaps get something (even a little piece of a paper clip?) to stick in the connector to emulate the missing pin? Would that work?

Have you tried degaussing it. If the monitor has a menu look for the magnet icon and try that.

Jim, some monitors don't use all 15 conductors on the cable. If you suspect an intermittent cable, try to isolate the problem first by using both hands to bend the cable at various points, while watching the monitor for the color change. You may discover an open at a location you didn't expect. In that case just loop it and tie it.
If you see a piece of conductor in the connector where you believe the missing pin is located, you could try sticking something in there, but you have to be careful.
Always observe ESD precautions.
Having said that, I would not recommend messin' with a monitor cable. Monitor cables carry very high frequencies and must meet strict ground shielding guidelines. It may not be a safe environment to tangle with. They are usually difficult to repair successfully. In the past we (Vo-Tech Class) have been able to order a new cable from the manufacturer, and if we're lucky it will have a snap-on connector inside the monitor. Some have to be soldered. Nowadays, the common solution is to just buy a new monitor, CRTs are quite cheap with everyone wanting LCDs.
Proper recycling is another issue.
