I run Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 on my computer and have the folder options set to show hidden files.
Why doesn't the "Search" function find some files? As an example, there is a file smss.exe located in my c:\windows\system32 folder that a search of my hard drive doesn't find, although, when I navigate there I see it.
Thanks for any insight into this situation,
Mel

Mel;
You still have to uncheck the Folder Views Option to display Hidden System Files. Goto any window, click on Tools > Folder Options, View, then find the option labeled Hide Protected Operating System Files and uncheck it. Click OK, and OK again and you will be able to search for these files.

Thanks Wiz,
I did as you suggested.
Opened Windows Explorer
Clicked on Tools>Folder Options>View (tab)>Checked "Show hidden files and folders">Unchecked "Hide protected operating system files".
Did a search, nothing shows up.
Navigated to c:windows\system32\and found smss.exe there.
Any other ideas?
Mel

Anybody know how to make the search function search for hidden files and folders? I, too have unchecked the "hide protected OS files" box, but I notice that, while searching, it says " Looking in system folders, NOT looking in hidden files and folders." I'm running XP Media Center w/SP2.

Maybe this will work
Go to Search program (found this out the other day...hold down "Windows" key and hit F)
click-All files and folders
click- more advanced options
click- search hidden files and folders
