If you selected them correctly you will have the 10 files in the recycle bin. When you "shift Click", count the highlighted files. Then delete them and check the recycle bin. Works every time for me, with Windows XP.

If you are still holding down the shift key, when you hit the delete key, then you'll bypass the recycling bin and directly delete the files. Note the different dialog box that appears when a file is deleted via the shift-delete key combination vs just the delete key.
