Holy COW!
What a trial getting my Slackware Linux distro configured on my AMD machine.
I gave up and installed on my Stinkpad and it's actually WORKING!
KDE desktop and this Konqueror browser is cool; it hilites misspelled works.
I'll post more later. |

Get a Mac. Unix without the headaches. 
Seriously, I think that Sun and Mac are the only *nix machines that don't bog you down in tech hell for weeks on end. Linux works well, but configuring it is a real challenge. Too many options.
The Forum runs FreeBSD on a Dell box. I'd switch to a Mac server if I could afford one, though.

Yeah, I played w/a G5 the other day at CompUSA and I was impressed but then again, I'm impressed w/ALL the new tech I can't afford.
The newest Intel/MS laptops absolutely SMOKE on graphics and everything. I was looking at the new iPaq PDAs and they're the same; just haulin' arse!
If I go Mac, it'll be to take advantage of the recording studio capabilities but I'm really liking Linux mainly because it ain't Windows; ya know? |

I run an intranet server for my studio with a G4 mac... it's been a piece of cake. It would have taken me 3 times as long to do the same on Linux or (gasp!) Win....

I always liked programming the Motorola 68000 a lot better than the Intel 80x86. It was a more logical instruction set. I don't know anyone who programs to the metal these days, so I don't really know what the differences are. Used to be big endian vs. little endian, segments vs continuous addressing.

Hey. a coworker gave me a CD with a programe called knoppix. You can down load it for free. It's a bootable linux desktop you can put in the CD drive of you windows system. You get a nice linux desktop. Search the web play games, ect. You know get your Linux fix on your Windows system. But, Bob's right get a MAC. Linux without all the config problems. Apple rocks.  |

I wonder if Apple will use a stock Intel processor or a custom one?
Within the last couple of days I read an article that Apple currently only has 2% of the PC market. That's down from the last report of 5%. I wonder if that's the real reason for going with Intel? |

I believe Apple will use custom processors.

I read elsewhere that Apple cited heat as the main reason for change to Intel. The IBM chips run hotter than Intel for some reason. That's why they haven't been able to produce a Powerbook G5, at least not yet.
I really like my Powerbook G4, but it does run rather warm.

Linux is certainly powerful. Let's say you got a 9 channel tape drive from 1982. If you have the physical interface you can probably find a linux driver for it. But, it is also a bear.
I've been playing with the FSMLabs Real Time extensions to Linux for several years. They've used it to monitor and control a magnetic bearing for a spindle turning +30,000 rpm. |
