Can anyone tell me how I might transfer music from a turntable or cassette deck etc. into my computer so I can then put it onto a CD?
Regards Brendan

Almost all turntables require an "RIAA" preamp (to recover the full fidelity). If you have a stereo system with a "phono" input that will do it. You will need a "recording" or "line" out from the stereo to go to the Line In on the PC (do not use the mic input as it's mono - the Line In is stereo). If you don't have a stereo with a phono input, you will need an RIAA preamp and one that will put out close to "line level", not the low level that a turntable will put out. The PC input requires a higher level (same way with a computer mic and the reason a P.A. mic will not work).

You will also need a program to "record" to the hard drive and save the files as wav files for full fidelity (do not save as MP3 as it is a compressed format that is something less tha full fidelity).

Otherwise, see my Interfacing Audio article. http://the-predator.tripod.com/dell/sec7-9.html
