A free download and it is still a beta version but works well.I was surprised with what it found on my PC.

Overview
Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways spyware can enter your PC.
Participants in the worldwide SpyNet™ community play a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.
The user must be an administrator to install this application.
Note: This download has been updated to include signature version 5680, which is the most current as of January 7, 2005. Customers who have installed Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware prior to this date do not need to re-download. They will receive signature updates as part of their next automatic or manual signature update.

I dl'd it yesterday and installed it both at home and across a 4 computer network in an office I look after. It will protect the users from crap that they would otherwise have to manually scan for, or manually update, as in S&D and SWB. I find that after I install S&D and SWB and come back a year later that almost nobody has bothered to update the definitions or get upgrades to the program. This will solve that problem.

If this is an official Microsoft product, wouldn't I get this in the automatic Microsoft uptdates or "patches" I regularly get on my e-machines Windows XP? I've noticed that recently a yellow bar has been appearing under my header clicking every now and then saying that a pop-up has been blocked. But I also get these (pop-up?)warnings telling me my computer is infected with spyware and I should "click here" to download an anti-spyware product.
If the link you have posted will get rid of those anti=spyware pop-ups, I'll go for it.

Gary, it's not an "update", so it won't show up in the MS Auto updates. It's a separate program. Right now Mikeysoft is making it available as a free program.
I have it loaded and seems to be OK. According to what I see on the Dell user's forum those that have loaded it like it. |

Thanks Jack and others. This thing really works. I had 2 files and 89 registry keys infected, which got cleaned up.
On the download and installation,
I could not find the 25 digit Microsoft registry code on my computer, but using the "alternate" registry method worked fine. [This message was edited by Gary Ulinskas on 09 January 2005 at 08:48 PM.] |
