In the course of some recent modifications to my OS I suddenly am missing a key component of my SoundBlaster software.

It is likely that you can reinstall with out de-installing. In any case, I highly doubt you'll make anything worse off by trying to reinstall in the current state.

Roy - You should be able to just reinstall the software. It will write over the existing files in its directory.

Roy, if you reinstall the sound balster software from the original installation disc you should be fine. The install wizard will first of all check for already installed components and should only install what you have missing. BUT just to be sure I would back up the registry first. This gives you the option of reverting to how your PC is now if you run into problems after the reinstall. If you dont know how to do that I'll explain the process but I would need to know what operating sysem you use.

To back up the registry in Win 2000 do the following (this is also the same for win9x):

- Click on the start button to desplay the start menu.

- Click on the RUN command.

- type the word REGEDIT in the box and click ok.

- you should now have a window open called registry editor.

- on the menu bar click on the word registry to open the dropdown nenu and then click on the "export registry" option.

- you should now get the familiar "save as" type window so you need to call your file something and save it somewhere where you will be able to locate it again if you need to. I have a folder in the root directory for this purpose, you may want to do the same.

- after you have done this your registry settings have been backed up.

- now close the registry editor and carry on with your reinstallation of the sound balster software.

- If you run into problems after the installation you can safely uninstall and if you go back to the registry file you created (and saved) and double click on it your registry will be restored to your previous setting.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. Its really a good idea to do this registry back up before installing any new piece of software so you have an escape route if things go pearshaped on you. More inportant with Win9x than win2000 because you do have the recovery console option with win2000 to repair things if things go badly wrong.
