I have Windows Media Player, Winamp and Musicmatch onboard as well as a pretty cool oem wav. program that sort of works on my XP that I carried over from my old dead Win95 system. I've done some some file manipulations and conversions but I just discovered today that I apparently cannot convert a CD or WMA file to anything else (I want to rip from a CD and edit it in wav form as a study aid). Is there something I'm missing or is there another freeware program that can do this? A Winamp utility? Or do I need to break down and buy a comprehensive program that can do all & everthing. (Which leads to the next question---what do we like these days?)

addendum------just a side note----what this is all about is that I'm finally getting around to fullfilling a promise to copy a couple of cuts of Remington Ride to email to someone and I want to reduce the file size significantly. This is for a banjo player who thinks that RemRide is a banjo tune (I think he heard Reno & Smiley do it) and I said---uh, I don't think so. He believes me but now he's real eager to hear the real deal. I've got Day & Emmons. Wish I had others.
So I sat down this morning to take care of bizniz and discovered that apparently I can't. So whoever can provide me with the solution will be preserving the honor of steel guitar.[This message was edited by Jon Light on 17 April 2004 at 06:50 AM.] |

hey there,
you don't really need a specific program to do what you want. You got everything there already with either Winamp, Media player, or musicmatch.
I can't remember the specifics at this particular moment, but from Media player, there's a button on the top right area of the program window that says "import" or something like that. Be aware that Media player imports in WMA format by default, not MP3.
There should be a similar option in musicmatch. If you feel you need a specific program, look into Sound Forge or WaveLab. These two have trial periods, so you could probably download them, use them to do what you want, then uninstall them if you don't like them.

Thanks Kiyoshi. As far as I can see, I don't have the ability to rip from a CD and convert it to a wav file to edit. I can rip, I can convert wav to mp3 and back but getting from CD to either doesn't seem to be there.
However I've gotten great assistance via email and I believe I'm ready to go.
(the answer(s)----Goldwave(shareware) and/or Audiograbber(freeware).
And the truth Remington Ride? It was originally an ocarina tune. |

Jon: Try DbpowerAMP. Freeware! It rips and converts.
Just about every audio type is supported: mp3, mp4, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Monkeys Audio, RealAudio and many others.
You'll need to download the converter, then go to their codec page (Codec Central) for the correct plug-ins.
It integrates into your "shell" so you don't need to open the program to convert: just right click on a supported file to bring up the convert options. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ |

In Musicmatch you can determine what type of file it saves as by going to Options>Recorder>Settings and in the "Recording Quality" panel choosing the recording format you want (mp3, wav or wma).
Ain't it about birthday-time again at Hank's?! ;~)

Tommy--if I download one more audio utility I think my system is gonna start smoking. Hmmm...cool! I think I'll try it.
Russ--came & went with minimal fuss, ado, or much of anything. Came this close to getting up & stomping a bar patron who was trying to dance with & cop free feels off of every gal in the bar. Turns out I would have had every band-mate right behind me--they were all monitoring this jerk. He got lucky and was bounced before we had our opportunity. That would have made for a pretty cool b'day.
Oh--I'll check out the Musicmatch tip. I'm getting bored with the subject. Who brought it up, anyway?
